I just installed windows server 2003 on a server with 2 NIC's. Now i want to configure the server to for VPN and also share the internet connection on the network. any help

You will need to give more info on your setup for us to be able to help. Like what kind of connection for the internet you have, are you using a router ?

But you will want to look into setting up RRAS.

Yes i am using a DSL modem, an SMC router and a Linksys switch. Modem is connected to router and router connected to server on nic 1. I shared the internet from nic 1 to nic 2 and nic 2 is connected to switch and setup DHCP on the server. Now that works. Now am trying to setup VPN but the message i get is that i have to turn off internet sharing in other to enable VPN. And if i turn of internet sharing workstations won't have access to files and the internet. so my question is how do i setup the VPN and at the same time share the internet.

Thank you for your help.......

If you have a router make that do the NAT'ing on your network and share the internet through the router instead of the server. Dont use DHCP and ICS on the same network as ICS runs a mini DHCP server. Once you have configured your router to NAT. You will need to change your DHCP settings to point the gateway IP to your routers IP LAN address.

Depending on your router it might or might not allow for VPN pass through this is something you will want to check. You will also need to decide what setup of VPN you are going to use PPTP or L2TP. Depending on that will need to configure router router to open and forword ports to your VPN server. If you do a google search for port numbers it will give you the ports you need to open for VPN you might also need to open protocols to like GRE protocol 43, this is not a port number but a protocol number.

Some routers can act as VPN points to.

I dont know the specs on a SMC router its something you will need to look into and what options it supports.

so i will only need to enable nic 1 instead of both?

Router shares the internet. Setup VPN and am able to connect to server but the network on the vpn client's side becomes slow and you loose internet connection to the web. Also am not able to browse the office network at all. Can someone help please..

Try using both nics setup vpn on 1 of the nics, make sure details are been given to the VPN client, ie, DNS and Gateway IP. Sounds like your VPN client isnt getting the gateway IP.

first off thank you for your help. Now the point i get mixed up is setting up the two 2 nic for VPN. nic 2 is not connected to anything and i disabled it. What should it be connected to and how do i configure the dhcp for vpn.

leave 1 nic for your lan and use the other nic as the vpn adapter. or you could just the 1 nic, its upto you.

But the reason your loosing the Inet on the vpn client sounds like a routing problem or not all the info is given to the client.

am confused now. Should i have both nic's connected to the router or one on the router and the other on the switch? How would the lan be configure through the server so that workstations have access to files?
the dhcp for vpn should i assign ip for that or let the system takes care of that?

Ok forget about the 2nd nic for now.

Connect a VPN client and do ipconfig /all and paste the info it gives for the vpn connection.

highlight and copy the text and paste it to a text file or pipe the output to a text file.

Client
IP: 192.168.10.180
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.10.10
DHCP Server: 192.168.10.10

Client's VPN
Server IP: 192.168.3.1
IP: 192.168.3.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Gateway: 192.168.3.3
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1

The VPN client is on a different subnet, you would need to setup routing between the 2 subnets.

If possible it would be easier if you had the both on the same subnet.

I don't seem to have any control over the subnet mask. Is there a way to control that?

You should be able to tell RRAS to lease the ips from your DHCP server on your network, it will reserve a few IPs for VPN connections

This is the error message i get.

Checking Network Protocol Connections

TCP/IP CP reported error 733: Your computer and the remote computer could not agree on PPP Control Protocol
