I have just installed Virus Scan Enterprise 8.5i on a Windows Server 2003 box and immediately after reboot the system was practically unusable. Every menu and program took literal minutes to display and load etc.

I narrowed down the cause to the On Access Scanner and disabled it. It now runs normally.

Is this a known issue and if so is there a fix? On a XP Workstation 8.5i with the OAS runs fine. Ideally we want this protection on the server as well.

Cheers,

I have VSE 8.5i installed on my test W2K3 SP1 Server and it works fine. I have not seen any performance issues with it so far.

Could there be some application installed on your PC that is conflicting with VirusScan? I know ScriptScan causes grief for some applications, which is why they have added an exclude ability to it. (I don't have ScriptScan enabled on my servers)

i have rolled this out to approx 30 so far and no problems. except one mdb getting file locks - and i'm not sure if this is mcafee related as i havent had a look yet

i'm just running with the defaults just now

i have excluded the AD stuff though as per ms tid

Have you rebooted again? Just wondering if everything completed from the installation?

Thanks for the input. I've tried uninstalling the software, restarting the server and then reinstalling followed by another reboot.

It still seems to cause a big issue if the on-access scan is enabled. At the moment things seem to be okay with it disabled but it's not the most ideal situation.

Cheers,
Steve

Try disabling the Buffer Overrun Protection and Access Protection features and see if that makes a difference. We don't have those features enabled on the servers here, but where we have that enabled on the workstations, we've seen some cases where we had to either disable certain components or add special exclusions to allow those PCs to work.

What you describe appears to be similar to something I encountered recently with one of my workstations recently. In that case, attempting to open Internet Explorer to surf the web would take forever for the page to load. Once we disabled Buffer Overflow Protection, that PC behaved normally.
