Hi,

I recently had a problem where I found an unused PC in work (user left job) and turned it on to see what was going on with it. Turned out it had a power-on password that only the old user knew.

After some research I discovered you could reset the CMOS settings using the jumpers on the mothernoard. Fine. Done that. Didn't work. Removed the battery on the motherboards aswell and replaced it after about a minute. When I booted it I got round the power on password but got an error message:

163-Time and Date Not Set

Dug around some more and downloaded Softpaq SP8126 (Compaq Setup Program). Everything worked OK and I managed to set the time and date and all the other settings looked fine. Rebooted and it was going great until windows started scanning the hard drive for consistency problems. It finishes that looks lke its gonna give me the option to ctrl+alt+del to log in and it just reboots.

Thats it. Goes into a loop where it keeps scanning for problems and then reboots.

Same happens when you try for Safe Mode. Any Ideas? Presumably I've made a mess of the power on password fix but it may have been messed up before i went near it. That's what they all say ;-) From talking to a few people the PC was working fine before the last person who used it left.
