To anyone who has encountered this anomaly,

I installed windows onto a sata hdd successfully but it was a version I wasn't happy with so I decided to wipe it and try another version.

With two different copies of windows xp I'm not able to successfully install windows onto a sata hdd anymore. Runs through the installation, but gives me a blue screen when the OS gets booted for the first time. "Windows is shutting down to prevent your hardware from damage".

All fans are working, thermal paste has great contact. Right now I'm running on IDE and everything works fine. Just want to know what the problem(s) could possibly be.

MSI RX480 Neo2-F ATI Socket 939 ATX Motherboard and an AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.20GHz OEM Processor, 1GB Kingston Ram(I checked it), Powmax 300W power supply, 250 GB Western digital sata hdd(second one I've tried, same issue)

If anyone can help me that would be wonderful. IDE works just fine, but I would really like to use the 4 sataII ports I have.

Did you supply the SATA RAID drivers at F6 for SB400 during Windows installation? There should be a MAKEDISK on the mainboard CD that would allow you to make a floppy diskette with the RAID drivers or you can slipstream the drivers into the OS CD with NliteOS.

Was this first version Vista? And the second one XP? Vista has the SATA drivers for most MBs, XP does not.

What do you mean by:
->With two different copies of windows xp I'm not able to ->successfully install windows onto a sata hdd anymore.

What you probably need to do is 1) Pick a version of Windows you want to use. IF it's XP, make sure you have the SATA drivers installed on a floppy (you may/may not need them) IF you do NOT have any IDE hd's attached to this pc, chances are you winn NOT need the drivers. Adding an IDE drive CAN cause lots of problems and you WILL need the SATA drivers.

2) Begin the install process. WHEN you are given the chance, DELETE all existing partions, build one or more new ones, and complete the installion of the OS.

Your OS should work now.

go into the BIOS SETUP, see if there are settings for the SATA drive that enable LEGACY MODE (IDE)... this will make the SATA drives appear as IDE drives to XP and you can continue to install XP... also make sure that the SATA controller is not set to RAID...

if there is no LEGACY setting then proceed as wahnula mentioned, by giving XP at the F6 prompt the CORRECT driver for the SATA controller...

BadBigBen,

Yes, I forgot about the modern BIOS option, sometimes "Use SATA as Standard IDE" instead of "Legacy Mode"...but we agree that this is probably the problem.

I have only encountered this problem once before,
took me days to solve.

A day later I wanted to find something on the M/B cd,
did whatever was required and restarted,
on rebooting the m/b cd turned out to be bootable and booted into the setup for the SATA drive,

My advice is to try to boot from the m/b cd and see if there are options on there for setting up the SATA,

Good luck

Hi Tony don't worry, as time progresses on us, we tend to forget things... and yes I agree as to where the problem is situated...
