What nees to be backed up from a Windows NT PDC to enable the B/U tape to restore the PDC onto another box? & does anybody have restore procedures?
Thanks

The most important stuff is in the winnt\system32\config directory. It contains the security information for your domain. However to restore that you'll probably need to ensure you have a FAT partition on the C drive. The files you need are always in use by NT and cannot be overwritten if NT is up and running.

When doing this kind of restore under disaster recovery conditions we have to restore that directory to another location on the C drive. Boot to DOS (hence requirement for FAT partition) and copy this info into the usual location. After this our DR PDC has all our users and security from our live domain.

If this doesn't make sense let me know and I can provide a step by step list of how we rebuild our PDC at the DR site.

Hope this helps

David

Install the Disaster Recovery Option and follow it through. You will need to create the floppy's (either Generic for any server which doesn't hold partition info or Specific for the exact machine you are backing up..this does hold all the relevant partition info). If you have a PDC failure all you need are the 4-5 floppy disks and the tape. Total recovery time if you have it all ready could be in the vicinity of 30-45 minutes...
