I've asked loads of people the same question because I'm not sure of the answer...'Can Windows NT 4.0 be defragmented?'.
Some say yes, other say no. I'm inclined to agree with yes because when you go to a hard-drive's properties and tools, I get the message saying No defragmentation tool is currently installed, which suggests that one can be installed. Also, I've got a few CDs here which say that one of the utilities on it is a defragger and works on 95/98/NT, but when I try to install it, it doesn't work.

Does anyone know if it can be installed and if so, can you suggest any utilities to download/buy.

Thanks...

NT definitely needs defragmented from time to time. Defrag utilities designed for Win9x will normally only recognize FAT or FAT32 file systems.

We use Diskkeeper Pro to defrag NTFS volumes.

BTW the defragger is a included with Windows 2000 - I think that answers the question about whether or not NTFS needs to be defragged. - Bill

Diskeeper is by Executive Software and there is a freeware version, Diskeeper Lite. Symantec, of course, also offers an NT version of Disk Doctor/Speed Disk, but no free version that I am aware of.

Diskeeper is actually the software which I have, but it doesn't seem to install. Saying that, the one I've got is quite old so I'll try downloading this one you mention.

I've already got it from some PC World site. Anyway, thanks for the link.

It seems to be doing the job...the computer I'm running it on (my work one) has been running really crappy for ages i.e. it crashes sometimes when you launch programs, takes forever to unlock, runs checkdisk on boot up etc.

It hasn't finished yet, but thats not surprising since I ran the analysis thing, and it said that I had 1900 fragmented files and about 16000 extremely fragmented files (and this is only on a 4gig partition).

Anyway, if this program works then thanks...
