Just wondering how to get rid of Windows Messenger.

I've cancelled it twice in msconfig, so now it had three entries (it keeps adding itself).

I've looked in the Add/Remove Windows Components section and the closest thing I can find is MSN Explorer.

Is this what I need to uninstall? If not, do you know what is?

Thanks

Well this is one of the major problems with windows in general....they just try to control you to much. MSN Messenger being one of the most pain in the asses as far as XP goes. If those links didn't help you I have a batch program that will wipe it away for good. You can check out my profile for my email addy if you want it.

Cheers,

Remove MSN Messenger from XP
Run the line of code below in the run dialog and MSN Messenger will uninstall! THANK GOD!

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Works great Dave

The quickest easiest way rename messenger folder after killing it in the tray and that will fix you right up.

I got it sorted...

Initially when I right clicked on the icon and didn't get anything like 'Options' or 'Preferences' I presumed it didn't have any.
However, if you open the program and look about, it has a section there where you can stop it from loading on startup.

Thanks

Uncheck Messanger in MSConfig then:

Goto Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Services

Double click Messenger

Change Startup type to Disabled

This will make it stop.

:)

cj001...just so you know the messenger service in "services" has nothing to do with msn messenger...although it can be confusing...if you wanna see what the messenger service does type the following in a command prompt:

net send localhost hey there

FroggyJ,

That maybe true, but it seems disabling it keeps MSN Messenger from starting and re-enabling itself every time you install one of Microsoft's patches and such.
