Windows Messenger Window not Maximized

Hi

For some reason, when I open my Hotmail Inbox via Windows Messenger, it is no longer maximized. I've tried everything: manually enlarging it, pressing the maximize button, then using file>close, etc etc.

Every time I try it, back to the small window. But the same window comes up maximized if I just get on through IE6 and the web.

I assume there is a registry entry out of whack... Can anyone help me fix this permanently?

Thanks

K

Karljuergen,

With the minimized Messenger window open, try dragging the bottom right hand corner of the window to enlarge to the preferred size. Close the window and then reopen it. The new size should be "remembered" each time MSN messenger is opened.

Hi

Nope, sorry. I tried that umpteen times! (Besides the fact that I don't seem to be able to get the same effect as a standard 'maximized' window...)

XP just DOESN'T seem to want to remember the size I set it to. Whether I exit by 'X' or by File>Close.

But thanks anyway...

Have you looked at the "Options" tab (to the right of "Inbox" tab) when you are in this Inbox? Try clicking on the "Mail Display Settings" and use the "Help" facility on that page. See if changing the settings does anything.

I took a look at that, but didn't see anything relevant.

In any event, as I mentioned above, the SAME inbox opens FINE when I access it manually via IE6 and hotmail logon. It is only when I access it through the passport/messenger that this happens. So I has to be a setting internal to messenger (registry entry?) I think....

I get the same effect with mine, whenever I open my Inbox via messenger the window is not maximized. Luckily it does not bother me though but I will be interested to see if you figure out a way for it to be maximized when you open it.

good luck

Perhaps you could try uninstalling Messenger then re-install it and see if that does anything.

Go to Start > Run, then type in this and run it. (one Line)

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then download from

Make sure you take the "Add in" package as this has something to do with hotmail email.

I was trying to avoid a reinstal, leaving it as a last resort. However...

Did the remove as you indicated; following reboot it 'cleaned up personal settings'.

Interesting note: got back to this thread by clicking its link in my inbox, and noticed that the new window is also slightly smaller than maximized (hadn't noticed before because I was so used to seeing it that way). Obviously, that isn't Messenger's doing... and may or may not be relevant, but I'm mentioning it in passing.

Because of where I am and my download speed, may be a while (e.g. a few days) before I post the results of the reinstal, but will do so ASAP.

Thanks for the help,

K

Ok, that was actually a LOT more painless than I thought... but no cigar. Same problem.

Given my observation in the last post, am now supposing it is a flag in the IE6 section re: subwindows. Any thoughts on this?

(I know from previous experience that a full reinstal of XP will do it but that's WAY too drastic a solution)

Any other thoughts?

Thanks

K

A few other things to try before we get to the re-install windows stage. Try them one at a time and check results before going on to next one.

Sometimes windows XP forgets it's folder view settings.

Here is a solution.
Backup these RegKeys.

1:[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]

2:[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags]

After that you must delete them.
Restart windows to take effect.

Now you can change each folder and the setting will stay (perhaps).

You could also try this.

Close all IE6 windows and try re-registering these files.
Run each of the following from start/run:

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Reboot your computer

Have you run the System File checking program by typing Sfc /Scannow in the Run Box?
Requires your XP CD.

And while your CD is in the drive you can try this.
The ability to Repair Internet Explorer does not exist in the version that ships with Windows XP. This feature only becomes available after you upgrade to a newer version. This is normal and has been this way since Windows 98 and IE4. However, you can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

If that doesn't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

REPAIR WINDOWS

Boot from XP CD
(Windows will now load some temporary files)

Options after booting

*To Set Up Windows XP now press ENTER

*To Repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R

*To Quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3

Press ENTER for first option (don't select Recovery Console)
(Accept Eula agreement)

Follow onscreen instructions to repair windows installation

Hi,

Aside: I didn't notice your response right away. For some reason, even though notify is turned on, I only rarely receive a notification that there has been a response... (Do I have to turn on E-mail notification on every post?)

Ok. I don't plan on doing a reinstal just for this. Involves too much work with updates etc...

(and somtimes it mucks up the sound, too...)

Nope.

I considered running diagnostics but didn't know what to do exactly...

>Requires your XP CD.
Luckily I brought it on my trip.
This was VERY SLOW... I wandered off and did something else; when I came back, there was no window on the screen-- so I assume it was ok.

>And while your CD is in the drive you can try this.

So no go with any of this. I'm not sure I want to do the repair windows option at this time (I'm away from my regular working location until early September).

Thanks just the same.... I didn't intend for such a tiny problem to consume so much effort! Now having read Frank's post, I'm wondering whether I'm dreaming and perhaps it never was fully maximized? But in any event, it should remember my manual size changes, shouldn't it... and it doesn't.

Try this from Outlook Express or Internet explorer
Not from messenger.

It worked for me,found this at Lockergnome

1. Launch IE and open a new window from an original page.
2. Go back to the original window and close it.
3. Drag the newer window open to the size you want it. Don't press the maximize button, though!
4. Close IE.
5. Launch it again, and the next time you open a link, it will open to the size you previously dragged it open to.

Should have made that last post clearer.

After I did this messenger opened full page also.
I did it from Outlook Express.

Hope this helps Dave

Hi Dave,

Well, sounded simple enough.

Opened IE; went to a page; clicked on a link that spawned a new page (which was smaller); closed the original; enlarged the spawned page; closed it. Reopened IE; went to the first page; spawned the second page-- it was smaller again.

Did it by File>Close; did it with "X". No difference.

Did it all over again through Outlook (I don't use Express). No difference.

(sigh)
