windows media player is pissing me off!!!!

I have downloaded WMP 7.1 for win98 and none of my files play with video...i get sound but the stupid visualization garbage plays instead of the video....i tryed reinstalling...i get the same problem with win 2000 as well
....any hints would be much appreciated...:0

Try running "mplayer2.exe" from Program Files\Windows Media Player. That is the old 6.4 version that is supplied by M$ with the Operating System and see if that does the same. "More Than Merely Names"

Have the files that you are trying to play ever been played successfully before? If this is the first time you are trying to play them are you sure they are movie files? You could try emailing them to a friend to see if they play on theirs. If you have had them working before you could try clicking on the view menu and switching the visulisations off.

You need to dl the correct codecs for the clip. If you have a copy of realplayer, open the clip w/ that, it will tell you what codec you're missing.

Follow this:

1) Uninstall WMP and all DIVX codecs
2) Reboot
3) Install WMP 7.1
4) Reboot
5) Install DIVX Codecs (4.x or higher)
6) Install WMP Codec Download Package (choose upgrade components and do not reinstall them)

For "Select Download", choose "Codecs Download Package". Doing this will refresh the screen and give you the option below to "Download Now". It's less than 1MB and you may have to reboot after installing it...
