Windows Media Player Drops Out of Full Screen Mode 1

I am using visualizations with Media Player 9 . When I put it into Full-Screen Mode with Radio Tuner it stays that way for about one minute, then drops out of full-screen. You can't really get much from the visualizations in a small window. I tried setting enable full-screen mode switch in
OPTIONS->PERFORMANCE->ADVANCED but that did not change anything. I have also tried using a different "skin" and it has not made a difference.

This is not failing on my Windows 2K machine. It fails only on my XP machine.

I thought I had a circumvention when I found that whenever the controls were visible in full-screen, the full-screen would be lost. A few times it went into full-screen mode without the controls visible and did not drop out. So I turned off showing the controls in full-screen and for one night it did not drop out of full-screen.

But that's not working tonight so that's not the answer. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks.

This issue seems to have affected many. The behavior seems to be mostly related to another program that may be kicking WMP out of full screen mode, such as a screen saver or browser. It could also be related to your video card as well. Here are a couple of different links that may help you resolve this issue. One user even resolved this issue by running chkdsk c: /r on their computer.

- Windows Media Player May Suddenly Exit from Full Screen Mode

- WMP10 visualizations won't stay at full screen

There is also a known issue with Plenoptic visualizations not working in full screen mode. See the below link(s) for more information.

- Visualizations Are Distorted or Missing in Full Screen Mode

Here are some quotes about this behavior from Zach D's WMP page, which is an excellent resource for WMP.

If you're having problems staying in full screen mode, you should verify that your screen saver isn't knocking you out of full screen, and check whether turning off WMP's Tools:Options:performance:Advanced : Enable Full Screen Mode Switch helps.

Q: When I use Plenoptic in fullscreen mode, it doesn't work. Ambience works fine...
A: According to the guy who wrote Plenoptic, this only occurs on the ATI Mach 64 video card, and is due to a problem in the card's DirectDraw support. Turning off DirectDraw acceleration using DxDiag.exe (part of DirectX 7 and newer) might make this work, but he was never able to get this card to work. Some other cards may not support Plenoptic in various fullscreen resolutions: changing the resolution may help fix this. Generally Plenoptic will work for any card that isn't giving us back bad data on the capabilities that card supports.

See the link below to see how the dxdiag.exe tool was used in resolving this problem.

Hope something here helps you resolve this problem.

I tell you want I think it may be.
I recently reset my ZoneAlarm and after about 1 minute, I get an alert, firstly to tell me Media player is trying to access the trusted zone, then after that the internet.
I think it may be one of the settings where it tries to update the content, Tools > Options >Privacy.

IllogicallyLogical [\b]Thanks for the suggestion. All three are enabled. However, the last "Test Ditect Draw" and all of the "Test Direct 3D" failed saying there was an error in that it could not set the display to "640x480 mode with 16-bit color". I also turned off write combing, as per the link you gave me.

Nothing helps. It still drops out of full screen After exactly one-minute.

Interestingly, this doesnot happen on my 2K machine. Only on the XP machine. Both are running the same release of WMP (Rel 9).

Well, it seems to be working now. But to do this you have to set visualizations twice! You can't set visualizations when streaming [Radio Tuner]. So I played a local file and set visualizations. Then I went to Radio Tuner . There is no visualization in FULL-MODE (even though I had just set it). If I go to "skin" mode I get a visualization - going into FULL-SCREEN mode will display the visualization for one minute and then drop out.

However, if in FULL-MODE I right-click and look at visualizations, it will show that there isn't any visualization selected (even though I did select it while playing the local file and even though in "skin" mode it has the visualization) Select the visualization now in the RIGHT-CLICK list and the visualization will start in FULL MODE. Go to "skin" mode, then select FULL SCREEN mode. Now, the visualization will no longer drop out of FULL-SCREEN mode.

So, in short, you have to set the visualization twice in two places to get it to stay in FULL SCREEN mode.

Thanks IlogicallyLogical for your help (and a star for it)
