I'm on Windows XP SP 2
I recently updated to Windows Media Player 11. Prior to this update, I had not used Windows Media Player on this PC.

Since updating, I have tried to play *.wav files. The *.wav files are saved to my harddrive. They look like they're playing (random video going, progress bar moving), but I hear no sound. I am not having trouble with sound on my PC in general. For example, when I logon or shut down, I get standard Microsoft music. When I go to the Control Panel-->Sounds and Audio Devices, all the test sounds are great.

Volume is turned up on the Media Player and it is not muted within the media player. Any ideas?

A simple thing. Did you max the volume control in media player?

Yes, I have the volume as high as it can go in the Media Player.

When you went to Control Panel >Sounds and Audio Devices, did you click advanced under device volume and verify that the Wave volume has not been muted or turned down? Does the problem only occur with .wav files?

Joey,
Thanks for your reply!
Wave volume has not been muted or turned down.
I tried mp3 and wma files--they worked fine.
Any help is appreciated!

If you go to Sounds and Audio Devices and you click on the Audio tab, are there any other devices listed under Sound playback. If so try the other one and see if that works. Also click Advanced under Sound playback and click the Performance tab on the Advanced Audio Properties window and make sure that the Hardware acceleration is set to full. You may also be missing some Codecs. Have you been back to Windows Update since you upgraded to see if there were any new updates for WMP 11? If you select Custom install on Windows Update were there any new drivers for your sound card listed under Hardware?

Joey,
Congratulations on being an MVP! After I tell you what I did, you'll know why I'm *not* one! LOL

I had 3 sound files to listen to. I tried one of them, and couldn't get it to work on my PC. So I had one of my co-workers try on his PC and it worked. Ultimately, we must've tried different files because I was able to play one of the files on my PC, but not the others. I should've tried *all* the files before posting :-/

Thanks for your time and attention to this matter!
Regards,
Louise
