Windows ME will not shutdown!!! 4

When I click to shutdown my PC, it goes into a pseudo sleep mode and then does nothing. If I power off at this point, scandisk is ran at the next power on with the message, "windows did not shutdown properly". I can work around this by clicking on restart, then powering down manually on the reboot, but that is annoying. Any suggestions?

Try putting this as a shortcut on your desktop. ME probably is having a problem turning something off and therefore will not shutdown properly. This shortcut should let the machine shutdown without freezing.
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE User,ExitWindows

I find that ME is driver specific. I had the same problem. Try updating all drivers especially your video driver to the latest ME version. This worked for me.
Also, make sure you do not have anything running in your taskbar that you dont need. It's just extra steps windows has to go through in shutting down the extra programs. Let me know if this helps.

Thanks to "mhughes" helps on creating the shortcut to shutdown in Windows ME properly. It work nicely. In regard to "bri4dsi" advice, can you tell me where I can go on the net to have my system scan for any drivers updates for my Windows ME system? I recently has a error MSVCRT.DLL while trying to view a download files. I try to search for any help on that issue but there was nothing about MSVCRT.DLL on here. Thanks in advance.

Dear Windows ME User,
You should have an icon in your Windows ME start menu that will take you straight to the Windows Update Website if you're online when select it. Try: Start>Windows Update after connecting to your ISP, then pick "Product Updates" at the website. This automatic online update feature is supposed to be one of WinME's strong points, I try to check in at least once a week, although there are fewer updates as the WinME bugs get worked out.

A really good site to check for updates is C/Net. Their software, CatchUp, is one of the best. I use it along with Window's Update feature for finding updates to ALL my apps, and also to scan my system for security issues. They can even scan your system for spyware.

I also have a problem trying to restart or shutdown Windows Millenium. The strange thing is that i know how to make it work - on my pc anyway.

I have my pc networked with another through a direct, twisted pair, cat 5 ethernet cable. Upon restart or shutdown of the machine with Windows ME, it will exit windows and hang on a black screen.
I have found out that this will only occur when the other machine (Windows 98) on the network is OFF. Also, when the ME machine is hanging on the black screen, if i turn on the other computer on the network it seems to allow the Windows ME computer to restart and it does so normally.
I don't understand what the problem could be and I haven't come across any other users who have written about this occurence.

Is there a solution to this strange Windows ME behaviour?

Hello, Tubeydude.
You might look to see if there are any updated drivers for your NIC card. I found that to help. If you go to cnet (

http://catchup.cnet.com/)

and download and run the catchup.exe software, they can let you know if all your drivers are up-to-date.
Also, you might try stepping through Windows ME troubleshooter. Run Help and search for the phrase SHUTDOWN and it will step you thru several pages of steps to fix that issue. It worked for me (both CNET and the shutdown troubleshooter!) The NIC was one of the culprets and a currupted shutdown sound clip!

I too had this problem and it turned out to be a simple incapatability issue with the keyboard. Just a thought but worth a try.
