Windows ME on Pentium-100

I have a Pentium 100 with 128 Mb RAM and a fast hard disk. Windows ME won't install unless I have a 150 MHz processor?

Windows 95 and Windows 2000 run on this machine fine. Why can't I run Windows ME on it? Why does a newer OS require a faster processor anyway? Surely MS have tweaked the low-level code so that it is less demanding on the CPU.

Does anyone know of a workaround to install Windows ME on a Pentium 100?

From what I have been informed of ME will only work on machines of 150Mhz or higher and have a minimum of 32 Mb of RAM.

Sorry but if you wish to run this new OS you would need to upgrade your CPU.

I wouldnt bother upgrading to WinME unless you didnt get WinMe at a real cheap price or free. I would stick to Win98 or Win2k, if win2k will work, thats much better anyways, you dont realizehow stable your system is until you try it.

Part of what a system will "run" on is defined by what a given person calls adequate performance. Win2K on a P5-100 may run but it's got to be pretty slow. If you find it acceptable, don't even think about WinME.

The reason new OSes need more horsepower is because of what's under the hood. The newer OSes have a LOT more going on in the background that what you see on the screen. For example, Win98 didn't look all that different from Win95, but it was almost a completely different OS. It was twice the size of 95 and ran quite a bit more slowly. Win2K actually does run faster than 98 under most circumstances if you have enough RAM but it too is completely different from '98 even though they look very similar on the surface.
