Windows ME Network Problem

Hi, I've been trying to network some computers for a friend. I have a ME machine that is giving me issues. The problem is when I open IE it won't even open and locks up sometimes. When I don't have the computer connected to the modem or hub IE opens right up. Everything is set for DHCP. I've brought the computer to work with to see how it acts on our network. We are set up for static IP addresses and the machine works like a charm. Not sure what the deal is. Is there a utility that can fix a IE DHCP problem or should I try to setup a static IP with the DSL modem. Also, the other 2 machines are a Mac and WinXP.

Hmmm, while its true I see a lot of weird things happen in dhcp enviornments, this is an odd one. Yes I would consider assigning a static ip address, but I would also scan for spyware. Recommend using spybot, ad-aware, or both. Also, empty out your temporary internet files while you're cleaning things up.

Well Matt I tried the static IP address thing and low and behold it didn't work. I'll try what you said and see what happens. I suppose it can't hurt. Shoot I may even reinstall IE I guess or try a different browser. Thanks for the info!

When connected to that network, can you ping external ip addresses, and domain names, say

http://www.google.com

for example? Any proxy settings that might be in internet options?

I can ping everything and no proxy settings.

That is weird. Does an e-mail client work? You might go ahead and throw on a different browser, let me know if that works?

It is definitely weird. I have tried a different browser and no luck there. I've almost ran out of things to try. When I first set this thing up it worked fine. I then decided to install the windows updates and that hosed everything. So I first did a system restore to a previous date and it worked than like an idiot I tried to download a few updates and hosed it again. I thought I could do a restore again to a real early date but now it keeps telling me that nothing has changed and can't restore to a previous date. Is there a way to restore ME to like factory settings. If I could just start this thing over from scratch maybe that would fix the problem. Shoot if I could find a good price on an XP upgrade and talk my friend into buying it that wouldn't be to bad. Problem is I'm like on a mission to fix this problem.

Sounds like you need to format and reload. If he doesn't have the cd, you can use magic jellybean finder to get the install key, but you'll need to search the hard drive for the setup.exe program and the .cab files. Usually in a folder named win9x.
