THe Help Center on my Windows ME is failing with error code 2147143679. The MS Knowledge data base has a fix for a Help Center failure with a different error code - it didn't fix my problem. Can anyone help?

The problem with your Help Center is. When you loaded WIndows ME there were
errors and al lof the databases did not load. Now how do you fix it.

1. turn all virus programs off and stop it from booting up. Uncheck in the startup group. Run msconfig go to startup tab

2. run msconfig uncheck the win.ini. You do not want it to start for this fix.

3. make sure all programs that protect the boot sector or removed or NOT started
on boot. Things like mcafee utilities, norton any produce, and etc.

4. now put in you boot disk in drive A:

5. now reboot

6. at A: type D:

7. type D:\setup

8. Now wait for the reload to get done. This should fix it.

Hello Mrfixit,
I have got exactly the same error on my brand new Dell with pre-installed Win ME, which causes me big problem as I cannot get any support anywhere. Dell doesn't know and MS doesn't answer without getting paid.
I have tried as good as I can with my limited knowledge to follow the steps you describe above, but I got stuck. Let me describe what I did and what happended.
1. I created a boot diskette using the stardard routines in Win ME.
2. I Incativated everything I could using MSCONFIG. Under the first TAB (General) I only left the SYSTEN.INI active, the rest was inactivated.
3. I placed the boot diskette in A:
4. I placed my Windows ME CD (Swedish)that I received from Dell in drive E:
5. I rebooted
6. at A: I entered C: which is my hard-drive (was that right?)
7. at C: I entered the command SETUP, which didn't work, I got a message saying incorrect command.
8. I found a similar command SETUP1.EXE in folder WINDOWS on my C-drive that I tried to run but then I got a message that the system couldn't find the drivers for Help and asked me to check whether the file IFSHLP.SYS was installed, which it is.

Do you have any other tips that I could try or should I do something differently?
Many thanks in advance if you could give anúy advice.

Best regards
Lassas

Sounds like mayby a corrupt file. According to MS it's save to install over your existing one.

The copy of windows ME that came with your Dell system may not be the full version of windows ME.You will need the full version.

Lassa, you have to type SETUP from your CDROM drive, not from your hard drive..

Thanks Syzzouille for your info. I will try again and keep you informed about the result. I suppose Mr Fixit meant my CD drive when he said D drive.

Lassas,

Go to then click on support. Now click on the Knowledge Base
Select The Windows ME option under product.

Then type in the error you get on the search line. They have a full set of instructions
on how to fix your problem.

You did fine but you must go to D: and it maybe E: at the A: prompt
Then type setup -s

This is my final entry on this topic and that is a big THANK YOU to all people that have been helpful, especially Mr Fixit, even if I wasn't able to find any more info in MS Knowledge database.
ACTIONS that helped:
I created my boot diskette.
I turned win.ini off.
I rebooted from the boor diskette.
I entered INSTALL from my Window ME CD (Dell version for Sweden), SETUP didn't work.
After 30-45 minutes and several re-starts my help center works smoothly.
Thanks again Friends and by for now.
Rgds Lassas
