I have HP 6736, 667Mhz Celeron, 64 MB RAM, 20 GB HDD, ehternet card, cable modem.
Windows ME hangs irregularly. No particular pattern. Sometimes with IE, soemtimes with Realplayer.

Is 64 MB good enough for Windows ME to perform well? Or is it another problem?

Your 64MB could be faulty.
The problem can quite easily be somewhere else as well, bsically anywhere hardware or software.

64 meg of RAM is probably just about enough to get by with running ME...Microsoft says minimum of 32 meg, but if you want to actually USE something, 64 meg is best. If it were mine, I'd probably invest in another 64 meg...total of 128. I had Me on my home PC with 128 meg, ran like a champ.

ME, like most Microsoft products, will expand to use all available memory.

Runs great on 256, phenomenally on 384.

Well, I beleive it also has to do with the fact that ME is so new and people have not had a chance to work out all the bugs in it!

I agree with ShaithisDanoveur, upgrade your RAM. I've got a 600MHz Celeron that came with 32MB of SDRAM. I installed virus scan software and then my machine CRAWLED. I upgraded to 256MB SDRAM and it really boosted performance. SDRAM is getting to be inexpensive. It's probably one of the easiest system upgrades that can boost perfermance in many areas. I've also got one of the dreaded software based modems, but if you throw a big load of SDRAM at it then it works great [most of the time, ha-ha-ha].

OK folks..heres the deal on this topic. Yes 64 megs is enough to run ME...But, only ME...the requirements do not take into accont that 64 megs will be plenty to run ME and all your programs. Yes, get more memory, and i mean a lot more if you want to use memmory hogging programs. When people say they are running just fine with 64 megs of ram, that is probably because they are not useing other programs that require 64 megs or more. Look at it like this, your running ME, If you are wanting to buy a program that recommends 64 megs, dont think, "G, I have 64 megs"...that dont work...get 128 megs and it might work just fine. And i say "might" loosly. Yes, ME still has bugs, like reg 98 did. I run 256 megs on a PIII 733 and 30 gigs, thought i'de run like a champ...and it does, except when i want to run a big memory hogging program. Also, check to make sure you not running all kinds of other stuff at same time. Do you have a bunch of icons by your clock?...well then, exit some that are not being used at that moment. Dont worry, they'll be back next time you reboot..so dont skitts out. also hit "Control ALT Delete" 1 time and see hom many things are running. You'de be surprised all the nick-nacks there as well because of some program you've installed that you aren't useing at present. I allways shut down every thing at boot up exsept "Systray" and "Explorer" AWWW. fresh memory!!! Any thing else, go back to win 98 SE and get the VXD_Fix file and repete all i said and you probs are clear. at present, i cant find a VXD_Fix for ME, and that is where my prob is. The fix will take care of most peoples probs with lock ups, blue screen of death and shut down failures. So, in return, if i've helped here, Please, HELP!!!!...lol Good Hunting...Zan

There's also a program available to help you get that fresh-booted feeling (this is starting to sound like a Massengil commercial). It's called WinRamTurbo, very handy little utility. They've got a free version, though I personally spent the paltry sum and bought the pro version. Highly recommended. Does a great job of "defragmenting" system memory.

When upgrading your RAM, make sure you get the same density. I upgraded from 64 to 128 and had lock-ups and crashes constantly. I didn't realize that mixing a high density and low density stick of memory could have such effects.

I changed the high density stick to a low density and 95% of my problems went away.

Stick with the low density sticks if possible, the PC's seem to like them better. They are easy to tell by sight. The high density sticks have half the number of chips as a low density of the same size. Jon Holmen

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! I keep running out of system resources!!
I have a HP Pavilion 1000mhz, 60 Gig Hard, and 256M RAM, and it's all leaking somewhere. After I've been on for awhile i gotta reboot for lack of resources.. Whats wrong?????

Running ICQ by any chance? It's a major known offender, as is ICQPlus. DirectConnect will inhale everything you've got in very short order. Napster isn't system friendly either.

To sum it up - the majority of the most common applications burn resources and don't clean up well after themselves.

I had this problem under Windows ME - I finally got fed up and switched to Win2K Pro, haven't had the problem since.

But when you changed to Win2000, did everything (like your applications) run okay?

I changed to Win2k recently from WinME and everything runs fine. Of course you have to spend some time downloading new drivers for everything, but it's well worth it.

Going back a few posts, I notice that Visual Studio is thirsty too. I do a bit of VB programming and everytime I run a debug session it soaks up a little more RAM that I don't get back until I close down VS. Since I put Win2k on, this isn't an issue.

I agree with the last couple of posts...

Ditch ME and go Win2K. I had 3 machines running ME and had nothing but performance problems and maching lockups. I switched to win2k and all of my problems have gone away...

I have 256MB on my machine and it runs like a dog! I'll be switching to Win2K reallllllll soon!

Didn't do me much good by adding 128MB. I now have 192, but still it hangs. Thinking of upgrading to Win2K

No about of RAM can solve all WinME problems. WINMGMT keeps popping up when I am playing games and it drags the performance to zip. I hace tried several memory managers and have found that FreeMem and MaxMem do an OK job of keeping things running smooth. I just reboot every day or so, to keep things happy. If anyone has the word on how to squash winmgmt, I would sure like to know.

FWIW- Athlon 1Gig, 512 MB RAM and it still slows down. IE 5.5 hangs every 10 minutes or so.

You can get 512 MB RAM for under $200 at crucial.com

Spose33 any luck on finding out how to get rid of winmgmt. I have the same problems with having to reboot daily and IE 5.5 hanging. It started out every 10 minutes and has gotten worse. Now it is hanging every couple of minutes.

Pen4-1.4 384mg ram

I would appreciate any help.
