I am new to windows me. It does not appear to have a backup utility such as windows 98 has? If it does it certainly isn't as obvious. I can't find anything in help except about archiving files, is that there substitute?

Try this:
You go to the WinME CD click on the Add-ons folder and then the Backup folder and then the MsBexp.exe file.

I do not have a WinME CD just a restore disk. In my experience if you need to use that you're in real trouble. I have checked in Control Panel/add/remove programs/windows setup under system tools and all items are installed. That is where it was under 98. ????

I just purchased a new computer and ME was already installed, the only way I can reinstall is with the recovery disc.

A copy of ME should be on your recovery disk. You can put it in and search through it to find ME add ons. Let us know.

There is obviously a copy of ME on that disk however it is totally unrecognizable. Any attempt to open any file other than a read only file results in an attempt to restore the entire drive and I don't need that. Do you know for sure there is a backup utility in ME? I don't think there is.

Put in the disk when it trys to auto run just X it out. Go to your cd drive by clicking my computer then right click your cd and open you should see folders one of which should be recovery or me . if me shows you can open if not open recovery and you will see me. once you open me you will see a folder add-ons open this and you should see a folder MS backup open this and you can click on the program to run it.

Dear mhughes,
Thanks for a for great tip !!!
I've got a BUSlink L30 USB External Hard Drive where the included software has been giving me fits. I've got an OEM Windows ME Disk just like the above user (my experience is almost exactly parallel with his). BUSlink says MS Backup will work with the L30. Now I can try it, thanks to you.
