HI,

A client has Winxp MCE SP2 installed but some programs tell him they can't run because he is running a version of windows below XP. Really strange I know as MCE is XP Pro as far as I'm aware. I can get various programs working using compatibility mode, but does anyone kow why this is happening and how to cure it?
Thanks,

Richard

MCE is XP home 32bit.

When I was born I was so suprised I didn't talk for 18 months

Thanks for replying.

But why do some programs report it as not even being XP (Haven't a clue what they think it is though!!)

Did you do an upgrade, as opposed to a fresh install?

You may have some dregs of your older OS in there (DLL files, registry entries) that are being looked at by your software, and your software is making an incorrect assumption about your OS.

They sound like badly written installer programs, where the programmer was not aware the Media Center even existed. So during the installer's check of the operating system it fails to recognize Windows XP Media Center Edition.

However there are problems in joining Media Center to a Domain, so maybe the programs are picking up on that, but that sounds a bit unlikely?

You could look at this but it might be a bit troublesome to use especially if you having success with Compatibility Modes.

This thread talks about Orca but it also shows you how to "spoof" an operating system version by amending the Registry. That may be the way to go?
