I am trying to install the Client Agent for Windows NT/2000 on a Windows 2000 server.

After a delay in the install process the following information box pops up:

Incorrect command line parameters.
Windows Installer. V 2.00.2600.0
Copyright...

After that the install fails/closes

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Michelle

Remote install still uses the local Windows installer. Have you tried running installer cleanup utility or reinstalling the windows installer? You can download both from the MS downloads page.

I tried the remote install last night. It stopped responding so I let it run all night and it apparently failed.

I worked on the Windows Installer issue yesterday since that appears to be the root of the problem.

I've tried the installer cleanup utility which didn't do anything. It gives the error that the installer service cannot be accessed.

I also tried installing the 2.0 version to which I got an error message saying the installer services already exists.

Do you know how to remove the installer service (so I can reinstall)?

I was having a similar problem on a couple of NT servers and never could find a way to remove the installer service. After I upgraded them to 2000 the problem went away. I wonder if running a repair on 2000 would cure it?

I have seen this problem several times before with the installer service. The most common problem is the SYSTEM account has lost permissions to the C:\. Verify the SYSTEM accoutn as permissions to C:\ and reapply down the structure that could solve your problem.

There was a problem where I couldn't start the installer service as the localsystem account. I finally got that fixed based on your suggestion by enabling rights to HD and then modifying local security settings/local policies/user right assignment and adding the admin accounts to the Log on as a service policy. After this I can start the Windows Installer service from the services list (and task scheduler too which was also not working).

Unfortunately this has not helped my install of the CA client.

I still get the "Windows Installer" error box which has the following message:

Incorrect command line parameters.
Windows Installer. V 2.00.2600.1183

The funny thing is that if I try to launch msiexec.exe from root\winnt\system32 I also get this same error.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Michelle

I finally found it!!!

Although this is not supposed to be specifically to fix the client install...it works!

Thanks for everyone's input.

Hope this helps someone later...

The fix was from 2001 and has not been incorporated to the media distributed in 2003 - unbelievable!
