I just put together a new 933 w/Asus CUSL-2 board/256MB pc133 RAM/IBM20Gb eidie drive.
The only OS I have been able to install is WinME... All other attempts result in a file read error of one sort or another during install. I have tried Win95/98/98se/2k/XPbeta. I have used different disks thinking it may be a cd read issue but I do not beleive it is. The only thing that will install is WindowsME and it is very unstable. When attempting to install apps I've downloaded to the HD I often experience CRC and read errors.
Anyone have any idea?

How far do you get in the install before it bombs out?
also you may wan to turn off the virus protection in your BIOS settings.

you can try copying just the cab files to your hard drive and run setup from the drive..see if that works. I think I cam across this problem a few years ago..it was do to the CPU over heating...once that was corrected it worked fine..it seems funny but that was the case...

try setting your BIOS defaults and then turning off virus protection..see what happens..

It seems to die about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through file copying. Never dies on the same file and I've used my Win98 & 2k disks to do installs on other boxes with no problems since attempting on this one.
I have attempted install from the hard drive and it has failed every time.
I was able to install Win98se on an old WD2.5Gb drive I put in the machine. However when I attempted to upgrade to Win2k it failed with both Win2k disks and always on a different file.
I will disable the BIOS virus protection and see what happens.
Thanks

Not that it is likely but in case anyone was wondering...
I finally replaced the correct piece of hardware to resolve this issue. Turns out that brand spanking new RAM I bought when I rebuilt my system was bad.
Oddly this seems to be a rather lame pattern in the hardware industry. I've recently put together 3 systems and in the process run into the following bad hardware:
2 sticks of RAM
1 ASUS Mainboard - it ticked like an analog clock???
1 CD-ROM Drive
1 Power supply
I have a wrist strap and I use it and I am very careful with the compnents so I doubt it is me... OK one time I for some odd messed up reason stuck a screw driver into a system and arced the mainboard but that box was promptly dicarded >:)

Won't tell you how many days I spent on a 95/98 attempt to load due to memory. That was why I suggested it as a possibility. Ed Fair
