W95 you have 3 choices . With W98 , if you have IE5.1 or higher & you
still have IE4 installed the following applies . No IE4 only 2 choices .
IE5.5 if over the top of 5.1 , offers 3 choices .
You can install IE5.1 straight over 4 . A big feature with IE5 is that
it can be repaired without uninstalling . Here is how to do it . Open
Control Panel , Add / Remove , click on Microsoft Internet Explorer ,
then click on add / remove down the bottom . This opens a window with
3 choices .
Choice 1. Add , insert your IE5 install program & you can find other
items you may not have installed 1st time .
Choice 2. Repair , fixes problems that may crop up with IE5 / Outlook
Choice 3. If unfixable , removes IE5 & goes back to IE4 , now if you
want to you can reinstall IE5 or a later version or another browser
altogether .
Start > Run , key in msinfo32 and press Enter . Click on Tools > IE Repair Tool or Start >
Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information . Click on Tools > IE Repair Tool .
Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt:
Click Start , and then click Run .

rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance
this will give you the IE Repair dialog... proceed to repair IE
I have tried that and yet the thing still cuts out. I use WINDOWS 98 SE with a 256mb Ram, 1.2Ghz and a 20GB hard drive. It has only started doing it recently!
I recently was involved with a PC with periodic stability problems. One of the running processes seemed to be a systems based maintenance or recovery routine that kept trying to complete its mission at various time intervals. Removing this startup process made things normal again.
Notice that you run Adaware. Would also suggest you run SpyBot for a second opinion (maybe even PestPatrol). SpyBot (Adaware?) has found a 'DSO Exploit' (data source object exploit) on many systems that I have scanned. That exploit needed a critical update from Microsoft.
I am a pretty keen Pc Maintanance guy. I defragment often and the only things that I run on startup are my anti-virus program, and my desktop transparency wizard. Even when I close all programs (except EXPLORER) it happens.
I have just followed that link you gave me and made the changes...we will see what happens. Thanks
sounds like your on your way to a fix. as to the res issue, I don't think your going to find a program to stop the resolution change as this is built into most programs.
amazingly that seems to have worked. I find that unbelievable as my PC has been in the same position for a year and a half now. Thanks everyone soooo much.
I am not gonna be stingy and am gonna buy a new 17" monitor that can go up to 1024x768 and above. What resolutions do you have by the way? and with what OS? Is it worth me upgrading to XP?
Oh one last question (sorry...) when my CPU used to boot up it used to say 1200MHZ now it says 800MHZ. Why is this?
On the monitor I always use this rule of thumb which applies really to all hardware,
First figure out what you budget is to spend on the montior.
Second add 20%.
Third Add another 10%, trust me it will be worth it.
Then purchase what you can afford in that range,
If the budget does not allow for an upgrade at this time then hold off till you can, cause if you try to just get by you won't be happpy 6 months from now.
As to the question of OS, I still use Win98SE. I have posted that as a question in this forum and still am not conviced to upgrade just yet.
opps and lastly, (sorry if i get ahead of myself)
A lot of motherboards have what was once called a turbo button, some used a series of keystrokes to engage it that would kick the cpu up and down.
Check your user manual for your mother board I bet you hit the series of keys that put it out of turbo mode, which is in fact slower.
Example one mother board I had you would press at the same time (control, alt, shift) and the Speed of the CPU would drop down.

hey it will generally occur attimes, when the physical RAM is full RAM is full and it just tries to shift all that inactive data to the virtual memory to run the latest active windows.so sometimes it happens like that, this can be avoided most of the times if you have good amount of RAM.
then, tell me how muc RAM you use, upgrade your RAM, you can reduce this frequent problem.
Then the alternate choice for this, I mean without any investment, is immediately download and try to use the netscape browser, you will find the difference, I donot mean just netscape, but any other tabs based browser, ok
I say this way because, theis IE window will take 3 MB of RAM space, so if you launch, that's all, 30 MB of RAM is engaged, but if you take the case of a TAB based browser, then you can vew many sites by opening numerous tabs, this consumes less RAM, this is better than the other casena,
