Windows freezes up every 15-20 seconds, I checked the Ctrl-Alt-Del list, cant see anything that would seem to be causing it, there are some that I dont know what they are such as Wdm, Internat(yes this is actual spelling), WinoldAp, etc I am running an Athlon/750(all drivers up) , 512Meg Rams, and win98 (non-SE).
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
I ran msconfiged, tried to remove as many componets I knew I might never used left some things alone(like my AV and what not) so far it seems to have fixed the prob for now, I'll wait a little while in the meantime I'd be interested in what could constantly be doing that on my sys.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
Before you did the MSconfig, did you check resources to get an idea how much memory was being used? I had the same issue, and I used the same corrective, so I agree with you but my brother said that it is better to not have so many tray icons because they are running in the background and draining resources. Heaven forbid that you would have any type of office assist programs running, because you can hardly identify them in config unless you look at it every time you install your new progs...

well I hardly have any tray icons, I keep them down to a minimal, my friend margaret however, wooo you should see her's it takes about a minute before you regain control of windows, in any case I remove any visuble background proccess that may have occured, and turned off start up sound, as well as rename 2 dlls that windows tries to access when you are prompted for Login(these two dlls are for tape drives, and sometimes causes Nvidia Gfx card users to lockup before the start up sound) , but so far it seems to have worked, also I usally try to know my system like the back of my hand, I dont normally like anything running that I dont know about. anyways thanks for your help, and I'll post again if the problem starts again this time with some different data.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
Karl, would you mind if I asked how much your system cost you? a ballpark figure would be fine. I am interested in getting an athlon with at least 256Mb of ram. Would you be able to list your system so That I may have a templete to go shopping with.

Thanks
fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

Athlon 750 = 205$ (monarchcomputer.com has 3 year warrenty)
Abit KA7 MotherBoard = roughtly around 150-200
128 meg rams = 116$ each (I have 512Meg, didnt get them all at one time)
Harddrives, um, you can get a good one for under 200
Elsa Erazor X2 (Geforce DDR) = 300$ (think price may have droped since the Geforce2 is out.
Microsoft Intelimouse Explorer = 80$ (great for all around, games, app, etc)
Elsa 3D Revelator Glasses (cordless) = 80$ (you wont regret these)
Sound Blaster Live! Platinum = 200$ (you can find it for 149$ now)
Creative Labs Encore 5X DVD/32X CDrom w/ Dxr3 hardware decoder = 130$ (they dont sell 5X they have 8-10X now)
D-link selfpowered USB Hub - 40$ (I strongly recomend this if you are going to use more than 2 USB devices, especially since it'll keep you from draining power from the computer if you try to use Bus power)
HP DeskJet 692C = 200$ (bought it a while ago, should be chaper, a 800 series now cost about 140$)
CNet External Voice/Fax/Data modem 110$ (very nice for a phone system now that I have Cable)

thats basically whats connected to my PC, I would check out monarchcomputer.com if you are planning on buying an athlon chip, they'll have the lowest prices with a 3 year warrenty, also you can build your own system their , and have them deliver your setup to you.

also you can always check pricewatch.com for lowest price listing, then goto resellerratings.com to check their ratings (avoid Icompz.com even though they have good rating, they ship all their CPU without an antistatic bag, and claim they never had problems, which is why I have a semi-dead A/600 under my desk)

oh also, far as power supply goes, get a Sparkle 300Watt power supply from monarchcomputer.com its a very clean, quiet power suplly with both AT and ATX connectors, and lots of other connectors. (AMD highly recomends Sparkle power supplies)
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
Thanks Karl, for the info. I really appreciate it. I was wondering about the 512Mb of ram. It must be nice to have that much ram :) Thanks for the advice I will begin my hunt for new components

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com
