Hi All, I have an odd problem that I have never seen, I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard edition service pack 2 that the windows directory keeps growing every day. I run the windows clean up utility however, in a couple of days its back to almost running out of disk space. This is the C drive that has 11.5 Gig's. I look at my Windows folder and it says its using about 8 gig's! That seems way to big!

Is there something that I should be looking at to get this to stop growing and to free up some space in my Windows folder?

thanks,
Mike

What services is the server running? Its probably an IIS log, I would look there first.

Check for any *.dmp files

-------------------------------

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Check also for *.log files as I have seen the .NET logs grow to a very large size in the past.

There's really not enough information in your post to speculate on what the issue may be.

When I have similiar issues, I try to locate all files that are being modified or created. This helps to narrow down the source.

This command will list all the files that changed on 10/27:

dir c:\windows /s | find /i "10/27/2009"

Thanks for the responses I did check the IIS log files and it was four Gigs! So I delted the majority of them. Thanks again for the recommendation.

I also turned off downloading of automatic updates a day or two prior to most of your responses and it seemed that once I turned that service off it stopped growing. Would that be in issue that after I install Microsoft updates that the installer packages are not deleting? How would I check if so?

thanks for the help,
Mike
