I have one win2kpro pc that gives a windows protection error at login. It states that files required by windows have been replaced by unrecognized versions. It asks for the cd. When inserted the error goes away but returns after every restart if the cd isn't in the cdrom drive.
Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

It is very likely you have an active malware that is replacing the "good" version on every startup, which is recognized at startup - repaired - and then changed again.

bcastner,
I've run home search removal, cw shredder, spybot and adaware all with the most current updates. The pc was unable to access the internet until I ran the winsock repair utility. Now it will access the web ok but I still get that protection error and it cannot install windows updates.
Got any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help,

Shtick

As a guess it sounds like a LOp variant. Do the online versions of Panda, Trend Micro and Kaspersky:
. I likely would, if still no joy, do a repair/upgrade reinstallation of the OS. If after that I could not reach Windows Update, I would plan on a clean install.

Thanks a million B.
I will attempt to use the scanners that you recommended. If that doesn't work I'll probably move the data up to the network and put a winXPpro image on that pc. I've always hated win2k anyways.
Have a great week.
