I could not open my computer in desktop or for that matter any folder. I get " Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. Thne send report or don' send icons".
I could not explore my drive or any folder. Pls help me.

I have installed Mcafee Internet security package recently and whether this might cause any problem.

Appreciate your help in advance.

senthilk99,

This problem sounds annoying. Put your XP CD in the CD-ROM, open a command prompt, and type sfc /scannow.

You will probably need to reinstall some of the SP1 patches, unless you made a slipstream disk with SP1 already on it.

Do you have lots of pretty Red X's in your Event Viewer?

Anything could be causing Explorer to crash. You might consider recent updates. Also consider any other changes you have made. Corrupted files can cause this too.

To get further information about your errors look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on this site.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

If none of the suggestions abover work. You might have a sypware that hooks itself into the NIC driver. I saw this once on one machine. Very difficult to detect. I used the freeware SPYBOT 1.3 to remove (along with AdAware). You can download both of these from download.com
Good luck!

I followed all suggesitions and finally I found the problem was with Mcafee Privacy service. After I uninstall, I could use Windows explorer. But can somebody help me how to have provacy service and still my windows explorer is working. Mcafee support is worst and I feel sorry for myself to buy such a product without support.

Do your Windows Updates, then re-install your program. Should fix the ailment. Make sure you enable the Windows firewall before connecting to ensure some protection, then disable it after your Security is installed.

The test continues...
