Okay here is my problem XP pro, Windows Explorer will just close itself in like 1 mins if left on the screen sitting there or doing something inside of it. Already did XP Repair from CD just to be sure nothing wierd there but problem still there any other thoughts anyone ?

Have you tried disabling your anti-virus software, if running any?

Yes went a far as booting in safe mode with only network support and just a FYI using Mcafee, So it was running with no start up items and the problem continues...

No just Windows Explorer, I even tried opening multiple Windows Explorer windows they all close at the same time as if some thing is killing the process, When I watch the Task Manager and processes it just goes away like it closed normaly. Also checked the Event Logs nothing there either.

I have noticed that certain programs that are run at startup conflict with a lot of the services that XP uses that sounds like what is happening what u should try and do is uninstall some programs also a bit drastic but back up the info u want and reinstall XP see what happens a freash copy of XP always seems to do the job for me. Yeah I was hoping this was something I could do with out a fresh re-install but today we have recieved another user having this same issue, So guess I'll keep looking for a fix or call microsoft support here soon.

When you used your CD to repair did that include the SP1 files, (if you have installed that)?

Some general things to try. (Ignore what you have previously tried).

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

Is there any clues via Event Viewer?

No sp1 when I did the in place repair , then I sp1 it to be sure that wouldn't magically fix it lol no luck but worth a try, problem with retore points is that that was turned off so no good points to return too but was a good idea.
Already tried the chkdsk thing also no luck, haven't tried verify yet maybe I'll try that tommorow.
Already checked for driver issues all looks good.
Wierd thing nothing at all in the event viewer.

Also just an update on what seems to help so far is adding /e,/n to the shortcut I created on the desktop but if I have that opened while I open another one with the older shortcut without the new options poof bith gone in 1 min. wierd or what. So the temp fix is change all the shortcuts with the options.

Linney thanks for the advice so far by the way.

Try running msconfig, disable all non microsoft services and boot into selective startup.

I have the same problem, and can't find a simple sollution. So far I re-installed windows xp and all applications. Worked ok for 2 weeks and yesterday problem starts again. Strange thing is that explorer closes only in some directories. Same for applications in which I select file open and go to these directories; whole application closes.

Searched the whole ms knowledge base articles and internet. So far no luck. Tried to disable several memory resident utils etc. but no luck.

Do you have a simple sollution yet?

Okay here is what I found so far and seems to have resolved the issue to this day after many weeks of software re-deployment and re-install of Windows and all sorts of other things narrowed down the problem to Domino.doc and how it was installed by another group in our company caussing this issue, not sure if your also using Notes/Domino.doc products but a quick test is to uninstall the Domino.doc part and see if problem stops if so that was the same issue I had and just re-install it and allow all components to install properly. hope this helps

I have no notes/domino. Its my home PC which I use for video editing. I suspect now that it has to do with harddisk defragmenting. I runned it on the two disks with the strange behaviour in certain directories.

No sullution found yet except re installing my 14 cd's norton ghost backup.
