I have recently had Windows XP installed.
Within a display of scattered icons resulting from copying and pasting from various windows, I could press the F5 key in Windows 2000 to refresh and arrange the icons or select Refresh from the View menu. Both of these methods were shortcuts to the long menu of View, Arrange Icons By, Name Type etc.

In Windows XP, the F5 key will not refresh the icons.
If I go to the View Menu and click on refresh, nothing happens.
The only way is via the long menu method.
Can somebody help me to activate the F5 key, or the Refresh command from the View menu to avoid the frustration this is causing.

No. I don't want auto arrange switched on. I want to be able to arrange the icons from the F5 key or Refresh the screen from the view menu. Auto arrange will line them up at the top of the screen which isn't what is required.

I was asking if it was enabled, not making a recommendation.

Have you set 'Remember each folder's view settings' under Tools, Folder Options, View?
