Someone here with Windows 2000 has an odd problem with the Windows Explorer accessory. With the "Explorer Bar", when she selects "view, folders", the left pane is a big, grey blank (instead of showing a hierarchy of folders). I've found a couple of threads online where people have this problem with Win 98, but not Win 2000.

How did I get to be a Tek-Tips "technical user"? I'm not sure that I'm qualified.

ecmsb78712/Ed,

Don't you worry about the "Technical User" part - you already are one!!!

As for the Explorer view problem, I would try to ensure that the "Remeber each folder's view settings" checkbox is cleared:
1.) Double click the "My Computer" icon.
2.) Click "Tools", then "Folder Options".
3.) Click the "View" tab at the top.
4.) Clear the checkbox for the value i mentioned above, which is about the 10th item in the list.
5.) Click "Ok".
6.) Now that you're back to the view of your drives, click "View", then "Details".
7.) This should provide a list-type view of your drives, moreover, when you click on a drive icon, the coresponding window will also be in "Details" view.
8.) Now, close the drives window.
9.) Right click in a clear space on your Desktop, and choose "Properties".
10.) Click the "Web" tab, and clear the checkbox for "Show Web content on my Active Desktop".

Thanks very much! However, I'm sorry to say that the person whose Windows Explorer is having this problem just reported to me that she followed the steps suggested above, but the problem remains unsolved. On another site where this (what seems to be the same thing) was discussed in relation to Win98, there was a suggestion regarding the Registry -- but I'm very hesitant to try a Win98 registry action on a Win2000 registry.

One of our tech support people was able to solve this. He found that the installation of Internet Explorer 6 was incomplete, and once he was able to get that process to finish, then the Windows Explorer problem went away. He said that he had to reboot the PC into Safe Mode to get the IE 6 installation to finish.

I can confirm the previous statement:

I had the exact same problem after installing SP3, IE6 and IE6 SP1 on my W2K system. The way i got IE6 to show the folders in explorer-bar was to start the system in safe mode which completed the IE6-Installation.
