I am having problems with Windows explorer crashing whenever I copy ,cut, move, or paste files in XP Pro with SP1. It is inconsistant and closes explorer after the error. Explorer can be reopened afterwards without any other errors or problems but it will crash again. Viruses not an issue because it is a stand alone laptop.

Any advice?

More info please...

When did this start and what changes were made before this happened?

Any event id error messages logged in the event viewer? Anything repetitive would be helpful, even if it is logged during time(s) where explorer is not crashing.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Also any pattern in the filetypes being manipulated? Is it crashing just on image files, maybe Office documents, etc?

Matt,

Here is the error message:
"Faulting application explorer.exe, vercion 6.0.2800.1221, faulting module unknown, v0x00080572"

No changes made to the system. Nothing we can think of. We are rebuilding every day trying to find out what is causing it.

What does this mean? Have you formatted and reinstalled? Virus/spyware scans?

just for a quick check, do a ctl alt delete and check your processes. svchost.exe.. a lot of them running, taking up cpu and/ or idle time? if so, virus is probable. get the stinger.exe from mcafee and search for it.
other than that, I dont know that I could be much help.
