When I open My Computer explorer tries to browse the HD for about 5 minutes or more until it brings up the folder. This also happens when right clicking a file and trying to access the send to sub-menu. Even once My Computer is displayed, if you open another window the same thing happens, Can anyone help????

What is the spec of your machine? Have you defragged recently? This can reduce opening times. Is your hard drive full?

This can also occur when windows has trouble reading from a device such as a dirty or scratched CD. Or if you have network shares set up but are not connected to the network.

Any feed back is appreciated.

A third possible solution could be a problem with the IDE Controller, which you can check by going to Control Panel / System / Device manager, and looking to see if the device has a ? or ! next to it. If there is a ? then the problem is more likely to be a driver conflict or problem allocating resources to the device, whereas if it is a ! you may have an actual problem with the controller on the motherboard.

Thanks for the prompt replies guys. But in answer to your questions, no defrag was done, there are no driver problems and there is no cd in any drives or any netwrok connections. I checked all this first thing, but i have never seen a problem like this before.

When you say "no defrag was done" do you mean you have never defragged, or you have defragged? Not sure what you mean from your reply.

Has this just happened all of a sudden or has it been doing it for awhile? Has anything changed about your machine from when it was ok to, i.e. hardware, software install? If so you could try system restore? Not sure if this will solve the problem though.

Ok sorry about that. The machine has never been defragged as it is only 2 weeks old. There have been no hardware changes. Software has been installed, and a system restore was done back to a time that it was ok. This is not actually my machine but a relatives.
It is a compaq presario.
The only other thing i have found out is that a full back up was done to DVD and during the verification phase of the burn in there was a power cut.
When this happens it's just like clicking on a shortcut to a missing file, windows browses the HD for ages. Eventually it finds everything but never seems to remember. This has really got me stumped at the moment.

Ok, so doing a system restore hasnt solved anything?

Well the only thing I have left to suggest mate is a format and reinstall or if it is only two weeks old possibly you could return it to compaq or wherever you got it from. You said the powercut happened during backing up, had any backups been made previous to that? Can you back up now? If so, and you cant return the machine format, reinstall and restore your backups. However the only thing that is worry in doing this is that the problem could be something to do with hardware that may have been damaged from a power surge due to the power problem. Although Iam certainly no expert on whether this would result in the problem you are experiencing, this is just my thoughts. See if anybody else posts anything of use before you do try formatting.
