Windows sets the DMA mode automatically for your machine relevant to your setup so you can't really interpret any meaning into it.
Did you read "Bcastner's" link (all 8 pages) it is one of the best I've seen on this matter with references to VIA and Raedon drivers all the way through it.
Out of interest (as you didn't mention it) although it slowed your system to a crawl did you still get the "Delayed Write" error in PIO mode?
