I decided to use "Panda" A-V. It works fine. However, when I boot up (or restart), I get a pop-up that "Defender has been turned off". I go to the section for the defender settings, and all choices are greyed out!
I just close it and no problems. But I'd like to get rid of it! It is the preview version (up to date). So is this like the "Error Reporting" that can't be turned off in the preview version, or a problem?

When you install some 3rd party antivirus (AV) programs, they may automatically turn off Windows Defender. In this case you may not be able to turn on Windows Defender again until the 3rd party AV program has been disabled (turned off) or completely uninstalled.

Getting rid of the popup (and yes, this has allegedly been fixed in the RTM versions):

1. Open the Task Manager, click on the ‘Startup’ tab
2. Select Windows Defender User Interface (MSASCui.exe) and click ‘Disable’ button.
3. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect

Thanks - that worked! Silly me, trying to use the Defender page, to do something with Defender!!!

See also, Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Security and Maintenance\Change Security and Maintenance settings, have a look at "Turn messages On or Off".
