windows crashing on boot up

i have win 2000 workstation at service pack 4 when powering on the pc it gets to logon screen ok so log on and as the screen is being populated with icons etc just as last of icons are being placed on tool bar i get the following err
***stop 0x00000044 then loads nos in brackets
multiple _irp_complete_requests

ive also had
0x000000d then nos in brackets
driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

this may happen seceral times in a row i restart and eventually it boots up ok into windows and i can use it all night long with no probs
the next day it starts again when switching on anybody any ideas

Could be anything. Does it work okay in safe mode? Have you ran UPDATED virus and spyware scans (recommend spybot/ad-aware)?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Load into safe mode and check your start menu. Remove all startup items.
