OK Luddite here.

I am trying to map a drive to a novell server via IP only.
Can go to others but they allow IPX connections. I cannot use novell client. WHen i do net use blah de blah i get network name cannot be found.

or something like that. I can ping ip but cannot connect either using name of server or dotted nds or ip address.

Any suggestions.

Binning Microsoft is not an option [rednose]

Cheers

It's because with IP only, you're unable to resolve the name like with IPX. If you map using the IP address, it should work. However, that is not the optimum way to do it.

example: map F:=\\192.168.0.45\SYS

Thanks Marvin,

I have chacked my DNS and it appears to be working.

I get a resolved DNS name returned when I ping my novell server.

To explain better. I have w hub if you like of three satalite sites connected to central head office.
Two sites are IPX/IP and one is not. Novell obviosly works.

However I need to connect fromn an NT server running a DOS script to map a drive to the one that only does IP.
I can do this to the other two sites but I cannot do this to the one that does IP only. I cannot browse to it either through the tree or the machine name.

I cannot install the Novell client as validation then becomes extremely difficult.

I have to use the NET USE command or similar.

Any other suggestions ?

Cheers

I've never had to use the "NET USE" command to do what I want, so I am at a loss. I think that slp requires the novell client. I also think that to connect via IP only requires the novell client. the Windows client for Novell uses IPX.

net use is an ms command
it can only connect to ms boxes

can you explain exactly what you want to do

ms connection utilities are ipx only - ie csnw and ms client for netware - they dont work over ip and they arent truelly nds aware - they need the bindery context

NET USE can be used to connect to Netware servers, could be you need SLP configuring for an IP environment.

Also could copy map.exe and map.msg to System32 directory of NT box and give it a go, using map command. I don't know if it will work without the client.
