I was trying to update Windows and Microsoft products, and it will not install the updates. I get the following message:
The following updates were not installed:
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130). Windows updates has been having trouble installing updates for a while. Can someone please tell me how I can solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

Is Active X on and are you using IE to get the updates?
Is it a valid OEM copy?
SP3 is out not too many updates since.

Sure - buy a legitimate copy of Windows.

In the event you have a legitimate copy of windows (There have been issues with the Genuine Advantage tool making mistakes), and are merely having a problem where you may have had to re-install windows on your computer for some reason, or took your computer to a repair vendor who may have re-installed windows in some less than professional manner, Microsoft has a program called "Get Legal" or something like that to help you solve the problem. If you have a legitimate copy of the same windows as on your computer, and you have the serial number sticker or certificate of authenticity, contact Microsoft for help. If you have a serial number for XP Home Edition and your computer now says it has XP Pro on it, then someone changed your windows without telling you, and you are back to the "Get Legal" program again (they will give you a substantial discount to get you in compliance).

If you were for some reason expecting someone to help you continue to run your intentionally illegitimate copy of windows, this forum does not allow such discussions )

As an afterthought to the above (since we can't edit here). If you have not yet installed XP Service Pack 1 it will also not allow you to install any updates. In that case go to and search for XP service pack 1, download and install that first, then SP2, etc...

I'm surprised if you don't have at least SP1 installed though that your computer is not a breeding ground for just about everything. I made the mistake once of hooking a computer to the network that did not have SP1 on it so I could download SP1, and never even got close - it was infected before I even got to the update website. From that point on I always keep the full service pack downloads on CD just in case I ever need to reinstall one....

I do have a valid OEM copy of XP.

I have found out that Microsoft update believes that the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool has already been downloaded to my computer and it is ready to install. However I believe that it hasn't been downloaded to my computer. So can someone please help download the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool?
