Can anyone think of a reason why Windows XP would block Hijackthis from running without giving an 'allow' option, could it be due to the Windows firewall.

AFAIK HijackThis doesn't try and connect to the internet unless you check for a newer version. If the firewall is blocking it you should see some information in the log (default location C:\WINDOWS\pfirewall.log) if enabled.

Are you getting any error messages / anything in the Event log when this happens Steve?

Cheers tazuk.
The main problem I have here (and there are many), is that this is my mothers computer and it is situated 12,000 miles and a 9 hour time difference from myself.

To give you an idea, I had to send a (zipped) copy of HJT by email as she had downloded the wrong thing. Then I get this message

"I tried to start the file you attached but got a message saying that 'this program can be harmful to your computer therefore windows has blocked it'."

I have requested an accurate version of the message, but this is going to take a while.
Patience will be required.

I know from the process list that at the very least
hbsrv.exe a Hotbar.com Spyware process is running.
also Fx5vr2.exe and E_541352.EXE which I haven't been able to Identify.

I understand your situation Steve. I'm currently preparing for Boxing Day with the family and their assorted "while you're here, my computer doesn't...." questions lol.

Sounds like she may be trying to extract the file directly from the email attachment, rather than saving to local computer first. If she's on Windows XP or 2000 it may be worth pointing her at the Micro$oft AntiSpyware beta download. I've found it fairly user friendly and surprisingly effective at identification and removal of spyware.

I'll keep an eye out for further developments anyway. I'm off over Xmas but doubt I'll stay off the web entirely over the holiday period.

Outlook has this nasty habit of deciding what attachments you can (and can't) download. I just rename my file with a different extension, email it, and instruct the recipient to rename back to the original.
