This is a complicated story. Here goes....

I upgraded my sons Dell Dimension 2400. I bought a new PC case and motherboard and kept everything else from the Dell. When I went to boot up, I got an 'Activate Windows' now message. Since it was the first boot, the drivers weren't set for the NIC card on the motherboard so I could not do it on-line. I then tried to do the activation over the phone, but was told that the numbers I was giving the voice activated system were no good.

I then tried to call Microsoft and they said I would need to talk to Dell. Dell says talk to Microsoft. I hope this is not a case of passing the buck as I would really like to get things up and running.

just ring MS on the activation line number. Tell them it's a upgrade of an OEM system (new video card, extra memory) and you will get a new activation code.

You will be asked if it is the only install using that product ID, just tell them it is the code supplied by the vendor and to the best of your knowledge. Yes it is.

I've lost track of the number of times I have had to do this for clients with Dell & HP/Compaq machines recently.

Chris.

Indifference will be the downfall of mankind, but who cares?
Woo Hoo! the cobblers kids get new shoes.
People Counting Systems

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Technically, replacing the motherboard makes it a new PC, so Microsoft is not required to reactivate.

And since it's no longer a Dell motherboard in a Dell case, neither is Dell.

Actually this is all remedied based via telephone with Microsoft. I was impatient for replies and called.

Chris was correct. Pat may be correct, yet with an embedded sound, video, NIC, etc along with the MB, the product needed validating.

Thanks for the input.
