All of a sudden Windows 98se will not shut down automatically. It just hangs at the window where it says it is shutting down. Any ideas on how to correct this?

I've got a variation of that problem. After several years of service my Win98SE machine now automatically reboots even when "shutdown" is selected, behaving as though "restart" was the choice. It started after I installed a home network.

Anyone ever hear of anything like this before?

Hi Brode:

You have described a common fault in Windows 98. There is a simple fix.

1. Click Start | Run
2. Type in "msconfig" in the box and hit enter.
3. In the lower right corner, click on "Advanced".
4. Put a check mark in the "Disable Fast Shutdown" box.
5. Okay all the way and restart the computer.

Microsoft posted this solution a while back.

Why not just put in a few minutes to see the link to Micro$oft support that I posted?

There are possible solutions other than simply disabling Fast Shutdown that may be required such as the M.$. Q239887 patch.

If you are connected to a network, try logging off first, otherwise windows 98 gets a bit lost trying to work out what to do. this has cured most of this kind of problem at work, however, there is the odd stubborn one.

Well now you guys have given at least 3 solutions that sound good to me, but I'm unsure of which one to try first.

For the record--I can't log off my network. There's a misconfiguration that leaves me an eternal slave to it. And I'm always leery of Windows patches. Every time I install one something goes wrong and I regret it.

Hmm...guess that means I should try the "disable fast shutdown" and see what happens. So unless anyone has a compelling reason why I shouldn't do that I'll have at it tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

Thanks to everyone for the advice,

Brode

Your system may need more time to end all of the processes running on your system. I have cured several shutdown issues by adding a line in the registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Control Panel
Desktop

add the line as a DWORD:
ShutDownWaitTime
Set the Base: Decimal
Set the Value data: 2500

Remember to back up the registery first.

Let me thank of all of you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, none of them worked and I still have a computer with Windows 98se which has to be turned off manually. The problem started after I installed LapLink 11.3. Any other ideas?

Hi, Cassie. I just decided to use your method using msconfig and guess what? The Advanced menu on my machine doesn't list "Disable Fast Shutdown" in its options.

Welcome to the Twilight Zone...

Have had a similar experience lately when updating my girlfriend computer. Seems that there were file conflicts from her previous version of Win98 and Second Edition. First I ran this link to test the shutdown. Second I simply reinstalled her VB6.0 files and ran a repair on Internet Explorer. Ran fine after the update and repair.

Shutdown shortcut(just copy and paste into the run command): rundll.exe user.exe, exitwindows
