I'm having problems installing things onto my hard-drive. Let me explain the situation and then hopefully you can help me out here...

About a week ago, I had problems with my computer, error messages everytime I tried to run the programs that I used to run with ease. In attempt to fix my computer I formatted my hard-drive and installed Windows 98SE.

I am running a 475mhz Pentium III, 10gig hard-drive, 192mb memory, cable modem, this is the core. Now I'm trying to install certian components onto my computer. I will give an example of what I'm talking about and hopefully someone can help me.

After trying to install DirectX 8.0 I get the following error message:

" RUNDLL32 caused an invalid page fault in
module MSDVBNP.AX at 0167:00655849.

Then it says after closing it, "DirectX 8.0 has successfully been installed on to your system." wether it has or not I don't know..anyone know how to check that as well?

This is really fustrating me and I can't run certain games either..such as "Everquest"( If anyone can help me out here, I will greatly appreciate it!

spike232,

Go to Start>Run, and type dxdiag. Look for version incompatabilities first, then click the Network tab and make sure everything listed says OK. Then click the Test DirectPlay button.

Or, why not try DirectX 8.1:

Ok I tested everything out..everything seems to work ok except sound. On the text box it says that there is no problems found, but when I tried to test the sound it gave this error...

"DXDIAG caused an invalid page fault in

BTW..I am using 8.1 I made a mistake by saying 8.0 sorry...

Does your sound work?

Right-click on My Computer, choose properties, click the Device Manager tab. Are there any items with a red or yellow "flag"?

What were the error messages you were receiving prior to the re-format and install?

Open Windows Explorer to the c:\windows directory and delete a (hidden) file named hwinfo.dat, then go to Start>Run, and type hwinfo /ui. Look over the resulting text file for problem devices. They'll be listed in red text.

Took your advice, found this..don't know what do about it

"Class: System

Yes, my sound works fine, but I can't use Windows Media Player, but I can play Winamp..which I thought was strange. Here's hoping this narrows it down a bit. The above is the only error that I found.

OK, from another board on here I found something very helpful..start>run sfc..did a check and found several of my .dll's were corrupted..the program fixed them and now I can actually get into my Everquest game but when I actually try to play the game I get this message:

"EQGAME caused an invalid page fault in

I've tried using sfc command to alleviate this problem as well, but it's not working. There is no flag errors when I got to start>settings>control panel>system>device manager..everything seems to be working right, but the sound just does'nt work! Any help would be appreciated..

narrowing the problem down, but it's fustrating...heh

Does your sound work at all. Can you play a cd or do the MS midi or wav files play in the \windows\media folder?

Ok, I looked into my c:/windows/media and tried to play the sound, but it won't play. Now when I start my computer, I can hear the familiar music play, when I get an error the little "DING!" or whatever I can hear that, but when I'm in the folder itself and try to play the same sound, it just won't play when you physically click them. I can play a song through my winamp,(MP3) and I can hear the music playing through my system. Whenever I try to play the game though the same error keeps coming up.

What dll's were corrupted?

Open Windows Explorer, go to View>FolderOptions, click the File Types tab, scroll to .wav. Click the edit button and post back with what's in this box:
Application used to perform action.

Hmmmm...I did this and I can't find .wav in this list! Maybe this is my problem? I tried to add to add it into the list by clicking "add" and then set it up, but then when I tried to push "ok" it said that Winamp is already using that extension...

Spike232

Hello, spike232.

You do not search .wav in the little window listing the Registered File Types. Instead, look at the extension below associated with a file type. Win9x, however, does not list rft in any order according to extension that is why if you do not know the exact name of the file type name, you may have to go down the list one by one until you discover the extension is WAV. (Win2k has improves the interface in this regards. Also you can discover it in the registry, but that is another story.)

The default WAV extension is of file type called "Wave Sound". It is that file type you should look into.

Ok found .wav files under "Winamp" and this what I found in the .wav edit box

Application used to perform action.

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINAMP\WINAMP.EXE" "%1"

Spike232

Sounds like you may be using the wrong drivers for your sound card. check on the sound card itself for model/serial numbers and try finding the most up-to-date drivers for it.

(normally very good)
check with your manufacturer.

Even if it does play sound through various programs ie winamp functionality depends on your drivers. Most of your problems seem to somehow relate to your sound card, might need a new one too. (Creative is excellent)

Hello, spike232.

You have not specified what action name corresponds to your listed command line. In any case, check and edit the actions consistent with the following:

Action : Play [default - ie in bold letter]
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /Play "%L"

Action : Open
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /Open "%L"
