i have two machines win98se, winxp pro sp2 sharing an internet connection through a netgear router. That works fine. I tried to enable file sharing on both computers and cant get it to work.
win98se 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0
winxp pro sp2 192.168.0.3 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
DHCP enabled on both machines..
I can ping the win98se machine from xp but not vice versa.
Also the win98se machine when clicking on network neighborhood i get "cant browse network"
workgroup name is the same on both machines.

no login features on either box, no firewalls, no virus scanners, or ad blockers etc..

thanks

First, make sure the XP firewall is off. You should be safe with the netgear facing your modem. I also highly recommend you assign IP settings manually versus DHCP. Also, if you haven't done so recently, download ad-aware and scan for malwares.

Okay, your real problem is likely the fact that you don't have your 98 login name created on your xp box. First, open properties of network neighborhood on windows 98, select your primary network logon client to be client for microsoft networks. Click OK and reboot. You'll get a logon box, you don't have to enter a password, change the username if you want, but you must click OK. Now, on the XP box, create the username you just made on Windows 98, in users in the control panel. Make sure the password matches, if the password was blank on 98, then don't make one here. You should now be able to ping and browse. From 98, if the XP box still doesn't show up, go to start, find, computer, and search by computer or IP address name. Once it is found, you can right click on it and create a shortcut to your desktop, so you'll always be able to quickly browse your XP shares on your 98 PC.

Good luck!

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

i adjusted network settings in win98se to client for microsoft networks. when i rebooted the machine i didnt get a login box

Do you have tweakui installed? If not, search for *.pwl files and delete them. Reboot, and a logon box should appear.

Matt's suggestion does work if tweaked properly.

However, I have 98 networked with XP and I don't have a login setup on the XP box to match the 98 machine. The trick is to enable the "Guest" account on the XP box and make sure the folder or printer you are sharing is enabled for "Everyone". If you do that, it shouldn't matter whether or not you have a password setup on the 98 box.

If that still doesn't do it, try it Matt's way using this link that has screenshots:

ok i got the two pc's pinging each other, apparently the winxp had mcafee security firewall loaded. I tried doing what that above website suggested now i cant even share files on the win98 machine. :( (nothing in the right click menu when clicking on a folder. File sharing is enabled. This is weird.)

Also I am confused. I dont have a user on win98 and dont want one... do I need that?

one more question, when clicking on entire network, shouldnt it at least show the computer i am on. in xp it does this, in win98 i dont see the win98 pc or for that matter anything...
I tried using the find computer in search it finds my local computer but when i click on open it says "inaccessible not logged on

captlid,

Like I said, I have 98 and XP sharing with no problems, and I don't have a login enabled on the 98 box. 98 just boots into its default profile using "Windows Login" as the Primary Network Logon. I didn't have to perform the steps at the website. I only suggested that you do so if enabling the Guest account in XP didn't work and you were out of options.

Browsing the entire network in either OS should show the computer you're on, that's right. The reason why you're not seeing your own PC in 98 is because you're not currently sharing any files or folders, or file/print sharing isn't properly enabled. Try undoing what you did at that website first if it worked before.

You might simply remove file and printer sharing, reboot and put it back. Again, my personal experience is that if you want Windows 98 networking to act properly with other Windows based computers, Client for Microsoft Networks should be installed and set as your primary network logon.

Not to trump Matt, who has offered excellent advice and insight on the issue...but personally, I've never had to use the "Client for MS Networks" in the Primary Network Login field when dealing with Peer-to-Peer networking.

But again, that's just been my experience setting up a handful of them, two of which I still maintain.
