Windows 98SE freezes and restarts

I have a P4 2.4 ghz system, windows 98 SE with 512MB. The system will constantly freeze then restart itself. This happens at different point, and will also restart while at the desktop with no apps running. I have a DSL modem connected, and this does seem to happen more when using IE6.

I've checked the CPU fan and heat sink, and all are fine.

You should use Windows 2K/XP ...

I'm using 98 b/c it what I had on CD...all my software CAd and such is for 95/98 and I was told I would have to upgrade all my software in order to use it, so I stayed with 98 SE, my other system, K6-2 500mhz never experienced this problem.

Have a look at msconfig for programs that are being loaded at the start. Look in the start-up for something that shouldn't be there.

Run up-to-date AV and Spybot. It could be a virus or spyware causing your problem.

If still a problem use Hijackthis (downloadable) and post the log created on this site as that will show what programs are running on your computer.

there may be a problem with your power supply.It seems that you have got too many devices running at the same time.

installed shutdown supplement, and it froze and restarted soon after...would a power supply problem cause the system to freeze and the retsrat second later. It doesn't immediatle restart, the system will litterally hang for a couple seconds first. I also cleaned out a couple running apps, but have tried that before also.

Such as Disk cleanup, defrag...etc
What are your power management and screensaver settings...?

IMO....lose the Realsched.exe file
or just rename it for now...

and i think MS FindFast could be the culprit locking your system cause it has to constantly update it's indexes...

Do you have your AV software doing a scheduled System wide scan.?

Realsched is gone, Findfast is gone, and no AV software installed as O thought this may have been the cause. system is clean of viruses before uninstall of AV. No scheduled tasks, the system simply stops responding and restarts a few seconds later without any input.

Other possible causes:

-Everything not completely seated on the motherboard.
Reseat everything.

-Overheating
Check the system and CPU's temps either in BIOS or with temperature monitoring software.
If the system temp gets over 45 deg. C, then remove the computer's cover, and run an external fan. If this fixes things, then install additional case fans. Recommended locations are lower front and upper rear of the case.
If the CPU gets over 60 deg. C, then make sure there is thermal compound between it and the heat sink. If that's ok, then replace the compound with Arctic Silver3.
If no luck, then install a higher capacity heat sink fan.
If still no luck, then replace the heatsink with a more efficient unit.

-Bad memory
Remove and reinsert the memory a few times, try it in different slots, do not use any optimal settings for the memory in BIOS, increase the memory's voltage a notch in BIOS, and swap it out with known good memory.
Also, do not mix parity and non-parity memory.

-Bad video card.
Swap it out with a known good card.

-Bad MB.
Swap it out with a known good MB.

-IRQ conflict with a network card.
If no problems show up for the NIC in Device Manager, then remove it from DM, shut down, uninstall the card, and restart.

I have a product called fanspeed installed, and it's monitoring 3 temps...the are varying wildy, dropping as low as 20c but spiking into the 70's, averaging high 40's

I'm thinking this may be the cause, evem with the cover off and a fan blwing in, they are still spiking, I'm guess the heat sink may be the problem.

Which temp's are spiking into the 70's?
Does your BIOS show the same spiking?

If it's the CPU, then it may be caused by the heatsink, or its fan, or it's possible that the thermal paste oozed out from between the heatsink and the CPU.
Clean the old paste off with a credit card, a soft cloth, and high purity alcohol(91% pure or higher).
Then, replace it with Arctic Silver 3.

If that does not work, then look into either a higher capacity fan, a more efficient heatsink, or both.

The program only shows the values temp #1, temp #2 and Temp # 3...1 and 3 really jump, #2 goes into the high 40's...the bios showed the CPU temp hovering right around 40 on startup...When I ran a full video all 3 temp values really spiked up into the 70's.

I also noticed the voltages.

the -12V: will go as low as -6v, -5V to -2.5V, and +5 to +2.5...is that normal?

I know that CPU get up to temp right away,so a good, well seated, heatsink is mandatory.....If you've taken out, or, are going to take out the heatsink you must scrape off the old compound and re-apply liberally...like ski said use artic.

Going to go get new compound in the morning, and re-do, but do those voltage fluctuations I see in fanspeed mean anything?

Tip!
Uninstall fanspeed , this program is made for
slowing down fans and "maintain adequate cooling" .
I recommend for monitoring pusposes MBM5 (moterboard monitor).

The -12 v is not that critical if it's fluctuates ,
but it sounded a bit much . Important is the +5v and +3,3v
they should be within +/-5% ,this is power to cpu/ram .

D/L Motherboard Monitor 5, and see if it produces the same results as Fanspeed.
Also, it appears that Fanspeed controls the speed of the fans, depending on the temperatures. This may or may not be a good thing.

I would not worry too much about the -12V and -5V readings, but a 2.5V reading for the 5V leg is cause for concern.
If that also shows up in MBM 5, then you may want to check the PS with a voltmeter.
