Does Windows 98 support TCP/IP Printing like you can do in Windows NT? If so, how the heck do you get it installed or working?

I assume you mean printing directly to a printer attached to a network. You need tcp/ip installed and running, if you don't have a DHCP server such as an NT domain controller, you will need to assign ip addresses manually for the network cards in each machine. Ask if you don't know how to.

If your printer(s) don't have network cards built in, you will need to buy printer servers. These normally come with client software to install on each computer so the printers can be configured as normal in the printers folder.

This is a rapid overview, if you want details, do ask.

Ok, let me explain a little more.

We have a Windows 98 DHCP PC on one subnet printing to an HP LaserJet 4 w/ static TCP/IP address running on its JetDirect Card along with IPX on another subnet. My question is not how I set it up or whatever, thats easy and I know that. My question is does Windows 98 have an LPR printing service that you have to install to support this? One of the people I work with said we might need to get the Windows 98 Resource kit to print to an IP from 98 since he didn't think it allowed TCP/IP printing natively.

I use NT 4.0 on my PC here at work, and to print to an IP we have to install Microsoft TCP/IP Printing Services. Once we do that, I can add a port and pick LPR port, then give it the printers IP and name and viola, printouts! I just need to know if there is something I need to install to all that in Windows 98 or if its included.

Inorder for Win98 to print to network assigned (IP) printers you need software to do that. As far as I know there is no software in the resource kit to do this. Now you van use HP jetadmin software for this. It comes with jet direct cards and print servers. This is your best bet. Install the jetadmin software for network printers. James Collins

I figured that Microsoft would include a TCP/IP service to print to IP in Windows 98, but I guess they don't think IP is used as much as there own protocol. I tried to get a latest version of JetAdmin from HP's site, they no longer allow you to download it. So I am hosed unless I can find one of the admin's with a copy for Windows 32-bit/98.

Also, I've used JetAdmin to manage PC's remotely and set them up to be printed via IP and IPX in NT 4.0 (yuck). I have never seen the option to install software on a PC to be able to print via TCP/IP to one of there printers. I am lacking in my knowledge of what the JetAdmin package installs or I am simply misunderstood as to what I am trying to accomplish?

Well to begin. Win98 is not a network OS so putting TCP/IP print support in it was not on their to do list (MS). You can use the jetadmin softwar to print to any TCP/IP printer on the network from any Windows PC with it installed. I use jetadmin a lot and like it. If you cannot find it email me with your address and I will send you a copy. (I have ONE extra). James Collins

This would be so much easier if we could run NT on the darn boxes, but the software will not run on anything but Windows 95, 98, 98SE, or ME. So using the JetAdmin software I would need to install it on just the PC trying to print, then print to it somehow from the JetAdmin software? Will this work with automated printing? Apparently this software they use prints out logs when certain events to occur for the lady that takes care of the phones.

There has to be some freeware out there that does this, someone has had to have this problem before and not realized until all the licenses were purchased. If I find something, I'll let you all know.

Once you use the jetadmin to install the printer ANY windows printing will print to it as long as the printer is set as default printer. Yes you would install it on any machine you want to print to the printer. James Collins

We found the answer without JetAdmin. Its software that apparently has replaced JetAdmin, the software can be found here:

Copy and paste this in a browser window since it doesn't fit the page width.

This is a very nice utility that is like Windows Add Printer Wizard, only allows you to specify MAC, IP, IPX, etc to print to.

Thanks to all who posted answers to the endless question!

HP now includes a utility to print directly across TCP/IP to a Jetdirect on
the JetDirect CD. When you set up the port, you can capture lpt2-4 if
necessary. It does take a while to "find" the printer on a large network
but you do have the option to manually enter the IP address. On an internal
and single port JetDirect, the port is 9100. On EX3 3-port Jetdirects,
the ports are 9100 (port 1), 9101 (port 2) and 9102 (port 3).
