I have messed up my PC big time while installing a slave drive and creating partitions.

When I bootup I get the MS Windows 98 start up menu with 3 choices:
1.Start computer with CD-rom support
2.Start computer without CD-rom support
3.View the help file

I need to have the win98 cd in the cdrom when I select option 1 and then windows starts up and all is ok
Option 2 and 3 I get Abort/Retry....

What do I need to do so that I can boot up without having to have the Win98 cd in the tray everytime??

Please help!!!

HI

After booting from WIn98 CD... follow the below commands..

C:
cd\windows\command
SYS e: c: (assuming E: is your CD drive.. or suitably replace.)

Now shutdown and restart.. you must be ok :)

it sounds to me like you do not have either an ACTIVE partition. (meaning one to boot from)
To do this you need to boot into MS DOS Mode (preferably with a floppy) and do the following

at the c: prompt, type in fdisk

press Y for lba support

choose number 2, set active partition

Select the partition to boot from, the esc out, and reboot. if this does not work, check your bios settings to ensure that you have "boot from hd0" or harddisk selected (you may have it set to boot from hd1, which is the slave, or only to boot from cdrom and floppy)

To get into bios, turn the computer off, then on, and either press F1, DEL, or INSERT and sometimes ESCAPE, F4 or F8 to enter setup (it will tell youon the bottom of the screen when it first boots)

Take the boot disk out of the floppy drive.
This is what it sounds like is happening. That menu is usually only seen when booting with the startup disk.

After reading over my answer it sounds kind of bad, but I think everyone has made that mistake I know I have many times, forgotten a boot disk in the drive.

The problem they are having is that it ONLY will boot with a bootable cd drive, and not from the hard drive. It possibly gives them an error saying "no operating system" or something along those lines. I could be wrong, and it could be a silly mistake with leaving the cd in. But i interperet in that you are getting an error when you do not have the cd in. If so, what is that error?
