I am having a problem on our NT 4.0 Network. We have all 98 clients and a couple of users, me included, who have Win2000 Prof. This started gradually and then started to spread. Our printers (LaseJet 4's and LaserJet 6 P's) all across our network keep getting Spool32 errors. I have changed the spool settings on these printers from RAW to EMF and vice versa and unchecked the selections under port settings, deleted all the *.tmp files on each PC, ran virus scans, unchecked config.sys,autoexec.bat under the System Configuration Utility, and selected certain startup group items under that tab, deleted and reinstalled the printers, tried to use a different driver if possible, renamed the autoexec.bat and config.sys files, edited the Win.ini file by adding c:\windwos\system\spool32.exe to either the load or run part there in Notepad and then rebooted, deleted all the .shd and .spl files in the printers folders, and done a lot of praying!!!! Please help anyone!!! Any suggestions!!

We had this for a long time where I used to work. The problem. McAfee antivirus was our colpret.
What ever antivirus program you are using, put anything to do with the spooler in the exclusions, example spool*.*.
That cured our problem. Do this for all the pc's as well as the print servers.
[cheers]

Where do I add those exclusions? In the Win.ini file, where I had put, at either "Load=" or "Run=" part of the file, c:\windows\system\spool32.exe Do I just take out spool32.exe and add spool*.* Is this right?

In the antivirus software.
Most antivirus software has a place you can add exclusions as well as add extensions.

I checked my system everywhere and I can find no place to add exclusions and extensions. I have even e-mailed Mcaffee asking them where to add these same things. Can you please step me through where to go to do this cause I really kind of need to get this fixed. Thanks so much!!! My version of Mcaffee: Build 3217 Engine Version 4.1.60 DAT Version 4.0.4191 DAT File Created 3/14/02

I have replaced spoolss.dll on all W98 machines with the current one from windows ME and that seems to work quite well. The problem for me was McAfee Online Scan. Because spoolerss.dll is automatically started, the file must be copied in the DOS mode. Spoolss is located in the System folder.

I do not have any machines where I work that have WinME on them. Once you done this, did you get anymore of the Spool32 error messages? I now one way that will allow my users to be able to print, and that's to use the system config. utility, select selective startup, and uncheck all the checkmarks, reboot, this gives a clean boot without all the drivers Windows would need to load. But, display seetings are different, and some programs you have to reinstall. I would like to get it fixed for good without having to use selective startup.

To add exclusions in McAfee, go to START, PROGRAMS, McAfee Virus Scan and then open the Scheduler.

Select your scan job and modify the properties of it. Click on the "Configure" button on the properties window and then click on the "Exclusions" tab......

You should be able to take it from there...

Spoolss.dll is available on the Windows ME CD or on a computer that is running Windows ME in the Windows/System directory. You may be able to get it from Microsoft or a friend.

Our version of Mcaffee does not have a scheduler where you can add exclusions:

VirusScan Product DAT Release Date

VirusScan 3.x Upgrade to VirusScan 6.02 now!

VirusScan 4.x Upgrade to VirusScan 6.02 now! This is our version!

VirusScan 5.x & 6.x 4191 03/14/2002

Macintosh DAT File for Virex 020201 02/01/2002

Is there another way to add exclusions to this version? Thanks for the WinME tip.

chcotreeast,

I am running practically the same version of VirusScan as you. (Engine 4.1.50, Dat file 4.0.4191.

When you install VirusScan, it puts Vshield on your taskbar, it also creates a program group off of your start menu that has three things... Create Emergency Disk, McAfee Virus Scan Scheduler, and Mcafee Virus Scan. (This has been true for at least the past couple years - I've been working with McAfee for awhile.)

The Scheduler is where you SHOULD be scheduling your scan jobs and Dat updates.... If all you have access to is the "McAfee Virus Scan" option, however, you can get to the same functions as you can in the scheduler... just in a round about way.

Open Mcafee Virus Scan. Click on the Tools Pull down Menu. Click on Advanced. In the resulting menu click on the exclusions tab.....

I am sorry, I told you wrong, we just have the ActiveShield with VirusScan Online that allows us to update in the morning manually. We did have ( NETWORK ASSOCIATES up to ver. 4.3), now that I remember, that had exactly what you are talking about. But our account expired. I know that this Virusscan Online is the problem cause I talked with a salesperson from Mcaffee and he told me what we have now is the reason. I just wish there was some way to make this work with our printing until we can can our Network Associates ASAP (for small business) back up. Thanks a bunch!!
