Windows 98 Shutdown problems

Hi,

I have been trying to work out this problem for a long time now and I just cannot seem to solve it!!

Click Start and Shutdown and pc begins to shut down- when it gets to the Windows 98 screen it freezes and stays there until your hold the power button in or unplug it from the back!

Like I said I have tried a few things- checked out all hardware- but im sure that this is not a hardware issue as it is occurring on a few pc's. I have used scan disk and defragmented machines however this does not resolve the issue- I have also checked for virus' but nothing was found

Any suggestions would be great!!!

Well, for starters, you could check previous posts here for a set of fixes that have worked. Quite evidently you haven't looked.

You could also look in the FAQs. There are 3.

You could do a google search for it. This is such a prevalent problem with 98 that there is a world of information out there. Of particular interest should be the Ahuama site.

You could look for the MS knowledge base information and install the patch.

This is a site for professionals. Professionals try to help themselves before they ask for help.

I do apologise- but I have tried installing that patch in the past, I have also searched on google many of times therefore I have tried myself before asking you guys

Do you have a network card? That seems to be a starting point for a lot of the shutdown issues.

Anything in bootlog.txt that starts up twice? That could be a source of the problem.

Anything in device manager that indicates that there is a problem with hardware or driver?

Hi,
Network is onboard- networked through TCP-IP

I think you are right -there has to be something to do with the network affecting the shutdown process.

Not sure how to check the bootlog.txt however there are no faults/conflicts in the device manager for hardware or software.

You can modify the msdos.sys file to specify that you want a bootlog.txt bootup each time. That will create a bootlog.txt (SHR) in the root each time the system comes up. Bootlog.txt gives a running list of the services that are activated.

msdos.sys is in the root (SHR). Add:
BootMenu=1
BootMenuDefault=2
BootMenuDelay=x (time)

I use 10 seconds, enough for me to get to the menu before it boots automatically, so I can get to DOS or the other choices.

There are so many mapped drives on my computer I sometimes feel like I am in a Borg rejuvenation chamber!

Currently I just do this most of the time:

Start
Shutdown
Restart in MS-Dos mode

Then just turn the computer off.

(You can also do a quick bit of dos-based cleanup prior to turning the system off.)

Have you tried the desktop shortcut thru user? That seems to help a lot of people that can't otherwise shut down.
