Ooops !! I've been mucking about for a while trying to install a USB scanner and I have accidentally deleted the STIMON.EXE application. My PC is a compaq and came with Win98 preloaded - I don't have a copy of Win98 CD-ROM. Can anyone tell me where I can download a replacement STIMON.EXE which I beleive is part of the Win98 Resource Kit.

Thanks.

You should have gotten a cd restore disk from compaq...

Look for C:\windows\options\cabs. Compaq puts a copy of the cabs on the Hard Drive. Go to start>run and type SFC Press Enter.

Extract one file
Stimon.exe

From C:\windows\options\cabs
to
C:\windows\system

Did the preload leave the .cab files? They would be in \Windows\options\cabs OR \Win98. If you find the cab files it is located in the Win98_42.cab File for Windows 98 and in the Win98_46.cab File in Windows 98 SE. You can extract the file via:
To extract CAB files with Windows Explorer

Follow the instructions for viewing the contents of a CAB file.
In the window displaying the contents of the CAB file, double-click the file you want to extract.
The Browse for Folder dialog box appears.

Click a folder in which to save the file you are extracting, and then click OK.

Or you can use the extract command in the \windows\command folder. It looks like :
extract /C compressed_file destination_file
or
extract /C Win98_46.cab c:
Where C: is the place you want to put the file.

Need help just ask.

Also, be aware Stimon, the StillImageMonitor is not neccessary to load at startup with a USB scanner, except for some HP models.

Go to Start>Run, type msconfig, click the startup tab, uncheck it if it exists.

I wonder if someone could help me? I did much the same thing with windows 98 on a Time computer. I used msconfig to disable stimon and now I can't upload pictures from my digital camera. When I connect the camera I get a message

"STIMON caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff7b997.
Registers:Etc"

I then found a web site :-

and I followed the instructions about renaming the stimon file and removing the registry links but all to no avail! If it makes any difference, the camera is a cannon ixus 300

I have renamed the stimon.old back to stimon.exe and I still get the same message.

I can't find Stimon.exe on the windows 98 disc. Is it in one of the zipped files and if so what do I do then?

I hope someone can help!

Yours Very confused!

Files within the .cab files are named thus:
blahblah.ex_ and (If you can find it) may be extracted with winzip (or other unzipper).
The best way (in win98) is to go to STart> Run > and type in: SFC
Choose to extract one file...
Stimon.exe is also included with ALL HP scanners in the driver install program, just reinstall the scanner driver. Cheers,
Jim
