Windows 98 Re-installation

I have reformated my hard drive and tried to re-install windows 98. But I keep getting an error message that there is already an operating system on system. How do I get rid of it?

Although it's not absolutely necessary, I always FDISK the drive before formatting. Here's a link on how to use the FDISK and FORMAT commands.

Before you start, make sure the startup disk you're using can access the CD-ROM.

at the dos prompt type "fdisk /mbr" to fdisk the boot sector of the hardrive and remove the traces of the old operating system

Many thanks for your advice. I think the problem is with dos because it does not recognise any command. I remember clicking on set original defaults so it may have loaded an earlier version of dos.
