Has anyone got any experience of running .net framework apps on Windows 98?

I have a customer with some old Win98 machines, 32MB RAM, P100 - you know the sort of junk I mean.

I'm developing a business app for them and I'd prefer to use VB.NET for a million reasons but I'm wondering what the performance will be like with these minimum spec machines.

The app is a front end to a SQL database. Around 12 users.

Any thoughts?

.NET doesn't run on Win98.

Miniumum OS is NT4SP6.

Not quite true Chip. That is true if you plan to host a ASP.NET page, however if you want to run a .NET app you can put the redistributable on a win 98 machine.

iowtech As for performance goes I am not to sure I haven't tried it on a low end machine. I would think that it should run just as fast if not faster than similiar apps on the same machine. Merely guesswork though like I said I am not sure. That'l do donkey, that'l do

iowtech -- The only time I tried to install one of my SQL apps on a similar box as you describe (although I think it was like a 233), it wouldn't run. I received an error though, so I will be insterested if you get yours to run as to what you do different. NT4, 2000 and XP all worked fine for me.

Zarcom,

Thanks for the article reference. I had seen that in my research too, but I was keen to get some real world views from people who had actually tried it, although it seems from this post that nobody has!

I'm interested in you guess that they would run better than for example a VB6 app. I hope your right!

RiverGuy - I'll do some performance testing and let you know how I get on!

Anyone else's comments very welcome!!!!!

Thanks for the link to the article. I guess because I myself wouldn't consider using Win98 for anything other than web browsing and email, I'm a little biased. [hammer]

Sounds like you need to run a test on one of these machines to see if it performs like you want. A single form that fetchs some data from the database should be all you need to get an idea of it's speed.
