quite a while back i was having major computer problems. Turned out I had a bad
motherboard. in the process of trying to determine the problem I reloaded windows 98
but put it in a directory of a different name (to make sure it didn't use the old
suspect files)
Windows 98 runs happily from the directory I named WINWOW but the problem is
I am not able to load other microsoft products. (like office 97 or office 2000)
They abend at various stages of the install; but these same CDs work fine
on our other computer.

so now that I have a good motherboard, and lots of disk space, I would like to
put the windows apps back in an appropriately named directory so I can use
these office applications.

Thanks
Mimi

You might have to format and re-install windows so that you can reset the windows directory to be C:\WINDOWS\.

You might not have to, but that will work.

Hope this helps! NATE

Reformat? as in reformat the hard drive?
that would be horrible. I have all sorts of stuff on this computer I don't
want to re-install!

I was afraid to re-load win98 because of the havoc it might cause; reformatting
would be rather final i am afraid.

don't matter, it works fine, i had it renamed to Win98 rather than windows, it worked for me

something else must been wrong

it writes to share dll in system32
so you must some how tell it where system32 is

and how would I somehow tell it where system32 is?

mimi

during install office looks for systems32 and install it
i don't think you can control or tell it where it is

your winwow should work, i had renamed windows folder many time during install and it worked all the time

something must gotten corrupt
suggest you should install a fresh copy of windows, or else you will run into other problem even if you get this problem solved
some games especially need this to work properly

you have to tweak the registry!! bu may prove dangerous

follow these steps

1) type regedit in run
2)Search for c:\winwows (Yoyr windows directory)

inmust be under currentuser->software->windows->currentversion

rename the key systemroot to c:\windows.
alternatively

u can search for systemroot and modify the settings and restart the computer

(Back up the registry before doin this for ur safety)

you are suggesting I change the registry? do I also change the name of the directory?
which do I do first?

Mimi

Is your old windows folder still on the machine? If so, I'd suggest removing it (or at least moving it/renaming it to somewhere else) - it may be confusing the install program if its still there.

maybe I should just reload windows, and not worry about the winwow directory?
when i reload I should just do the default, and let it make whatever directory it wants.
I don't want to mess with registries, I've never had any satisfaction with dinking with it.
thanks Hungster

hey no problem, at least you will learn that way
i always learn the hard way, that's why i am not afraid of problems, plus place where i work is cursed
so problems are what i deal with everyday, strange one too
lol
if you have 2nd hard drive, clone it and play around with it, you might pick up a thing or two that way

super 78 has suggested a good method,

change the registry first and then change the windows directory

i think this should do good!
