Hello,

My computer constantly freezes up (no blue screen, no mouse movement, total freeze and requires the reset button) when I minimize any application. It doesnt do it every time, but it does it quite often.

I click the minimize button, the application doesnt minimize and it totally freezes.

It also freezes when scrolling up and down on PDF files on Adobe Acrobat.

So maybe it is some screen refresh setting? Any ideas?

Windows 98, 433 MHz, 64 RAM memory

Thanks, Ken

The total freeze that you described sounds like a video problem. What kind of video card do you have? Do you have the correct and updated drivers installed? You might also try re-seating the video card.

Good luck.

what kind of vid card are u using?

if it isnt vid card related, as in reinstall driver or too small mem on vid card, then its

reinstall windows as far as i can see

perhaps someone has more specific advice

X-)

Windows 98 is mem hungry for one thing and runs several threads (Multi-tasking) when minimizing windows. Could it be RAM related? 64 MB running an ADOBE platform such as acrobat isn't very much. I've had problems with new versions of software on my old system, because the newer software and functionality is just more mem hungry. Had to ditch two 32's for 128's.

Re-installing is a blessed nightmare, but worth a try.

Just one man's opinon, but I'm no expert. Just an arts grapics geek.

go to microsoft.com, search knowlege base q127139. that will assist you troubleshooting video problems.

have you got microsoft Findfast in your startup folder, this can cause delays.
If in doubt get the Ball Pein Hammer out

Update -

Got the updated drivers and reseated the video card, and still freezes up.

I found out I have a generic SiS6326 video card.

I will try to run some diagnostics again, but I have done that before and never found any problems.

Thanks alot for all the replys.

I have the ball peen hammer handy, just in case!!! :)

Ken

I fixed the problem after several hours!!!!

It is one of two things:

a) Under display settings advanced options tab I set the refresh rate on the SIS display modes tab the same as those shown on the adapter tab.
b) I turned off icon animation

No more freeze ups after this, so I beat it!!!!

Thanks for the help. You guys got me mothivated to get it fixed. Ken
